The Vampire Diaries' New Season 6 Trailer Plays Like a Bad '90s Teen Soap (VIDEO)

Remember when The Vampire Diaries was a supernatural drama that regularly and unapologetically killed off all your favorite characters? Remember when the central love triangle between Stefan (Paul Wesley), Elena (Nina Dobrev), and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) was an asset that redeemed the villainous Damon and wasn't the central focus of the show? Remember when Elena cared about her friends and family and school (J/K, she never cared about school) and not just her boyfriend? Remember when TVD was more than just another teenage soap opera?

Those are the questions that ran through my mind as I watched the latest trailer for Season 6, which looks like a promo for a late-'90s teen soap that just happens to star a plethora of supernatural creatures. Take a look and you'll see what I mean:

I miss the boldness of The Vampire Diaries' early seasons. Back then, the stakes (heh) felt real, no one was safe, and Elena didn't let her boyfriend rule her life. I know Elena's a teenager and that teenagers have a lot of angst, and I know that she just lost her once-immortal boo for what she thinks is forever, but come on, girl! Turn off the sad emo music, tell Jeremy to put down the bottle, show some initiative, and figure out how to fix the situation!

In other news, who was that chick in Stefan's bed?!

The Vampire Diaries returns Thursday, October 2 at 8pm on The CW.
