Vann Nath, survivor of Khmer Rouge prison, dies

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) โ€” Vann Nath, an artist who was among only seven people to survive Cambodia's most notorious prison of the 1970s Khmer Rouge regime and who later depicted the facility's horrific torture, has died, his daughter said Monday. He was 66.

Vann Nath, who had been ill for several years, died Monday after falling into a coma in late August, his daughter Vann Chan Simen said.

Vann Nath, whose death leaves only two surviving inmates of the notorious Tuol Sleng prison, was the first of the survivors to testify before a U.N.-backed tribunal that is trying members of the Khmer Rouge regime on war crimes charges.

"We are saddened by the news of the death of Mr. Vann Nath, who gave a voice to victims," tribunal spokesman Lars Olsen said.

Vann Nath in recent years had chronic kidney disease requiring regular dialysis treatment. In April 2010, he was hospitalized in critical condition with a hemorrhaging ulcer.

His widow, Kith Eng, blamed his illnesses on the torture he suffered at Tuol Sleng, telling The Associated Press in August that he would have lived a long and healthy life had it not been for his year spent there.

Born in 1946, Vann Nath trained as an artist, but was later forced to work at a cooperative farm after the Khmer Rouge seized power in April 1975.

He was accused of being an enemy of the regime in 1978 and imprisoned at Tuol Sleng, also known as S-21, and kept there until January 1979 when the regime fled ahead of invading Vietnamese troops, who found only seven inmates alive at the prison.

Between April 1975 and the late 1978 up to 16,000 people were tortured at the former school before being taken to the killing fields outside the capital and executed, most often with a blow to the back of their neck. Vann Nath was spared because he was ordered to paint and sculpt portraits of the late Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot.

He would later paint images of torture such as waterboarding at Tuol Sleng and write a memoir of his year spent there.

The regime's radical policies left about 1.7 million people dead through overwork, disease, malnutrition and execution.

In June 2009, Vann Nath testified before Cambodia's war crimes tribunal against Kaing Guek Eav โ€” better known as Duch โ€” who was in charge of S-21 from 1975-1978. Duch, now 68, was sentenced to 35 years in prison for war crimes and crimes against humanity in July 2010.

RIP to Vann Nath. His survival at the notorious Khmer Rouge S-21 prison was nothing short of remarkable. Like his fellow Cabodians of his generation, he and his family suffered terribly under the savage Khmer Rouge communist rule. In at least one documentary film, he confronted some of the S-21 prison staff. His poise and dignity stood in sharp contrast to the Khmer Rouge communists' obfuscations, sloganeering, and moral cluelessness.
In the aftermath of the US pullout from Vietnam (1973), the cruelties inflicted by the Khmer Rouge did not prevent the "New York Times" from running the headline: "South-East Asia Without Americans: For Most, a Better Life."

Some mental giant (by the name of Austin) stated that Pol Pot was a Democrat. FYI Pol Pot (pulpot as he called him) was born Saloth Sar. Most people like Austin would find him to their liking. He did not do well in school. He could not pass entrance exams. He failed at most everything he tried. Finally, he was accepted into a trade school.....to become a radio operator. He wasn't very good at it. He never trained with Mao as Justin asserted. He joined the French Communist Party in Cambodia and found a home with others of his ilk. He participated in the "reorganization" of Cambodia (sending city dwellers into the countryside) and because of his lack of intellect he fit quite well into the atmosphere of the day.... the systematic murder of 2.5 million people. He was no democrat. He was a small minded, brutal, stupid, degenerate that killed anyone that knew more than him, had more education or had worked hard to own a business or land. That meant most of his countrymen. Pol Pot was rather like most tea partiers and ultra-conservatives that get their "news" from Fox. They want the world to stoop to their level (the gutter) and the want the world to stay the same. The want white men to rule...just because they are white and male. Perhaps if they got an education they would not feel so put upon and downtrodden....and feel the need to look upon anyone that is different as the enemy.

What other forms of enhanced interrogations did he paint?

Visited S-21 (Tuol Sleng) back in '99. There was still blood on the floor of one room they preserved as it was when they found it.

      Good night, sweet prince.

Tuol Sleng is such a sad, sad place to see. The resilience and warmth of Cambodian people is something everyone should experience. Love that country.

How could the Khmer Rouge be considered bad? They use water boarding and we use water boarding. They sound just fine to me!
      • Molly 8 mths ago
Well, there was nastier torture as well, and also the fact that they murdered over 20% of their population. But yeah, we should remember the other people who said waterboarding was ok when they did it because "they" were on the side of Right and the people being waterboarded were on the side of Wrong.

Nixon and Kissinger decided to carpet bomb Cambodia in 1971 to kill the vietcong who were there, all it did was turn cambodia into a power vacuum that pol pot seized, then strangley after the USA ran from Vietnam it was the Vietnamese who kicked pol pot out after he killed 1.7 million innocent people..That was another war created by the USA that killed millions.

"Waterboarding" was a form of torture in Cambodia... How could the Bush administration think that this was a suitable practice for our government???
      • Don W 8 mths ago
Heck no.....no waterboarding! Should just give them cup cakes and just have a party with them. War is cruel, ya dumb ass.
      • RobertM 8 mths ago
It's truly frightening that there is anybody out there that thinks the only alternative to waterboarding is giving free cupcakes. As if to imply that there was absolutely *nothing* in between.

        Scary.
      • John F 8 mths ago
yeah...i am sure waterboarding was the worst torture by the khmer rouge regime...don't be a sheep,

Vann Nath is at this moment relaxing as he shoves a red hot poker up Pol Pots' a hole. And a couple of thousand of homocommiepinkofaghippies are waiting for their turn. Bend over hippie.

Okay, all you saying this is the US's fault, just shut the hell up you loberal morons. We were in Vietnam and Laos, and Cambodia was the stop the spread of communist oppression. We were there because of "The Domino effect", the old theory that if we lost nam then all of southeast asia would go red, and it was right. We were trying to stop it. But these radical idiots took power when we left. They promoted what we were trying to stop.
      • Jaik 8 mths ago
Imagine that, right-wing warmongering not turning out how you planned. Learn to spell.
      • Towerwarlock 8 mths ago
Jaik, guess what? We lost Vietnam due to the liberals and the democrats imposing totally unreasonable rules of engagement and objectives. Guess what? They did the same thing in Afghanistan, and we are having the same problem. And what is worse, when the s o b 's come here we cannot profile, keep track of, or doing anything to prevent them from committing acts of terrorism. So, tell me, how is surrendering to the enemy and letting them come here to destroy us working for you?
      • RiotAct 8 mths ago
I love it, "only by our aggression and oppression of 3rd world countries could we keep them safe from communist oppression and aggression!" First, the Domino Theory is fully accepted to be a failed, ill planned political paradigm. U.S. involvement in Vietnam is universally seen as a tragic, monumental mistake.
Don't brag about our political mistakes, it just makes us all look foolish. If you want to be proud of anything, be proud that the U.S. system worked to end our involvement in SE asia.

"The regime's radical policies left about 1.7 million people dead through overwork, disease, malnutrition and execution."

It's interesting to me that the word communism or leftism is not used in this article, not even once.
