    Vector Capital to buy broadband business

    SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Private equity firm Vector Capital and electronics maker Motorola Solutions said Tuesday that Vector will buy wireless broadband businesses from Motorola Solutions Inc. in a deal they expect will close next month.

    The companies said Vector, which has offices in New York and Connecticut, intends to operate the business as a standalone company called Cambium Networks.

    Motorola Solutions Inc. makes police radios, bar code scanners and other products geared toward corporate and government customers. Phil Bolt, vice president of wireless network solutions for Motorola Solutions, will be CEO of Cambium Networks, the companies said.

    Motorola Solutions, based in Schaumberg, Ill., split in January from Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. Google Inc. offered $12.5 billion this month for Motorola Mobility, which makers cellphones, tablet computers and cable set-top boxes and holds more than 17,000 patents.

    Shares of Motorola Mobility fell 6 cents Tuesday to close at $37,98 and were unchanged after hours.

    Shares of Motorola Solutions rose $1.10, or 2.8 percent, to close at $40 and were unchanged after hours.

    The acquisition was announced about midday.
