Vehicle catches fire while in tow on I-25, battalion chief happens to drive by

Sep. 28—A tow truck driver was in luck Wednesday when a fire battalion chief happened to drive by when the car being towed caught fire on Interstate 25.

While traveling southbound at the Firestone and Frederick exit for Colo. 119 just before 5 p.m. Wednesday, a tow truck driver noticed smoke through his back window and pulled over. A Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control battalion chief noticed the smoke and pulled over in his work vehicle, according to the Mountain View Fire and Rescue spokesman Rick Tillery. The chief then pulled out a fire extinguisher and attempted to put out the flames while two fire trucks made their way to the scene, according to Tillery.

While the extinguisher was unsuccessful, firefighters applied water to the flames and were able to put it out within 20 minutes, Tillery said. There were no injuries, and the cause of the fire is unknown.

The exit was temporarily closed due to the incident.
