Verizon posts $2B 4Q loss on pension adjustment

NEW YORK (AP) — Verizon paid dearly to put iPhones in the hands of subscribers in the latest quarter, holding back its profits in the hope that its customers will rack up higher monthly bills and stay loyal.

The quarter saw the launch of the iPhone 4S, the second model to be sold by Verizon, and it was clear that many had been waiting for it. Verizon on Tuesday said it sold 4.3 million of them, and 7.7 million smartphones total.

But by the upside-down logic of the wireless industry, higher sales mean lower profits for the quarter. Verizon Wireless subsidizes each smartphone by hundreds of dollars, figuring that it will make the money back in service fees over a two-year contract. That means the wireless division, though still highly profitable, posted a rare drop in operating income for the fourth quarter.

An iPhone that Verizon buys from Apple for around $600 is sold in stores for $200. The question is whether phone companies ever really make that money back.

Sanford Bernstein analyst Craig Moffett argues that the example of AT&T, which has sold iPhones since 2007, indicates that the expected boost to profits never really materializes, because the phone companies have to keep subsidizing each new iPhone release.

"The earnings pop will always be a year away," Moffett wrote Tuesday.

In the results of Verizon Communications Inc., the phone company that owns 55 percent of Verizon Wireless, the effect of the iPhone sales was masked by large charge for adjusting the value of its pension plans.

The New York-based company reported that it lost $2.02 billion, or 71 cents per share, in the last three months of 2011. That compares with net income of $2.64 billion, or 93 cents per share, a year ago.

Verizon had warned that the big pension charge was coming.

Excluding the pension effect and another one-time item, Verizon earned 52 cents per share. That was a penny shy of the average forecast of analysts polled by FactSet. Comparable earnings last year were 54 cents per share.

Verizon had warned that hefty smartphone sales would hold back earnings, but analysts had expected a slightly smaller drop. Verizon shares fell 61 cents, or 1.6 percent, to close at $37.79 Tuesday. On Jan. 3, they hit a four-year high of $40.48.

Revenue rose 7.7 percent to $28.4 billion from $26.4 billion a year ago. The latest figure was in line with analysts' expectations.

Wireless accounted for all of the revenue increase, as Verizon's wireline division saw a small decrease. The "old" phone company essentially breaks even, despite the popularity of its cable-like FiOS TV and Internet service.

Usually, Verizon's overall revenue increase is driven higher monthly wireless service revenues, as it gains customers. But this quarter, the largest contributor to the rise in revenue was phone sales, which doubled from last year to $2.2 billion.

Verizon Wireless added 1.2 million new subscribers on contract-based plans, which are the most lucrative. It was the second-best result in the last two years, further solidifying the company's position as the industry leader, with 87.4 million phones and other devices on contract-based plans, and 108.7 million total.

Vodafone Group PLC of Britain owns the remaining 45 percent of Verizon Wireless, and lays claim to a corresponding share of the profits.

"Verizon Wireless subsidizes each smartphone by hundreds of dollars, figuring that it will make the money back in service fees over a two-year contract. " The key here is waiting. Verizon for some reason is not enthusiastic about expanding its FiOS market for instance in Baltimore County Fios is available, however not in Baltimore City. Other major European and Asian companies should start investing in our Broadband infrastructure. Cable companies like Comcast and alike really suck big time.

In 2004, while Sprint was knee deep in laying off workers for the previous 12 quarters in which more than 20,000 workers got the ax, the top 5 (five) executives at Sprint were pulling in a combined $69,000,000 in annual compensation. I'll bet it's still business as usual in executive compensation there and probably not much different at the rest of the carriers. Executive greed hasn't subsided a bit.

Oh, by the way, anyone here think that Verizon pays retail price for iPhones from Apple? Not a chance in hades.

        Yes, your post nails it.

Apple charges all carriers full retail price, as do Motorola, Samsung and htc. The difference is apple does not do sales to move products. Apples products sell themselves and are of the highest quality. I sell wireless service and I never see iPhones returned or not function properly. All of the Droids are crap phones... But they pay the bills ultimately.

David, you don't know what you're talking about. I used to work for both Verizon and Sprint at their corporate offices and worked marketing deals with handset suppliers, including Motorola and Samsung among others. We didn't pay retail for handsets from anyone.

So where in this editorial did it state how much the fat cat Executives engorged themselves with this year while jacking up your rates and lowering your quality of service?

Unless you want the government to go into the phone service (as if that would improve things), you just have let the marketplace sort these things out. I have only had an iPhone for a little over a year, but I got by just fine without one before then. The remedy for fat executives is for the shareholders to revolt. The fact that they don't is also part of the marketplace process.

It's not an editorial. It's a news story.

@texan, you can expect the gov. to tke over, while the rest just choose a different carrier.

I don't have an iphone and i still pay as much....can you subsidize my phone?
      • we're screwed 4 mths ago
Please, Annie. Consider yourself lucky that you most likely have an Android. I feel your pain, however. We are all getting it put to us by companies like Verizon.

Yes but the execs still get their bonuses. They also keep hoping us stupid consumers will continue to pay over $100 a month so that maybe the peeons at Verizon may get a little of that too. So you go ahead and get suckered into that iPhone contract. Verizon thanks you very much!

That's exactly why I don't have a "smart" phone of any brand!

They're top heavy. Driving companies into bankruptcy. I expect Verizon to be filing soon.

It will happen. The reset button needs to be hit. It is the only way out of the snake swallowing itself. It happens all the time. Corporate greed will eventually nail all of them. The sad thing is, even with slave labor in China these telecommunication companies cant make it financially.

They are charging customers for every little thing. They started charging for picture messages sent or recieved after 10-14-2011 (non-contract users) and even considered charging for paying with cards. I am now with Metropcs. My bill went from $125/month to $35/month and I still get to make calls. I never used the internet on that phone but because it was a droid, it was mandatory. My son is now using the phone as a music player and camera. Keep up the good work Verizon.
      • we're screwed 4 mths ago
All of Verizon's regular phones are crap. They force you into buying a data plan thats not needed in order to get a decent phone the wont break. They are getting exactly what they deserve.

ahhhh poor verizon, who jacks the rates, doesn't let minutes carry over , doesn't credit for unused minutes, tries to collect 2.00 to pay a monthly bill on time. Are we not already covering the bosses lunch bill.
    • we're screwed  •  4 mths ago
Verizon is NOT going to charge the customer more money and keep their loyalty. Verizon, AT&T and a bunch of other telecommunication companies and their investors are going to have to get used to the fact that huge growth in profit and subscibers isnt possible any longer with this economy. People have been nickle and dimed to death. They have finally plucked the last feather off the golden goose. Actually, I couldnt be happier. Texting was a gimmicky cash cow forever, they wore it out. Now its data. Soon, that one will be gone with WIFI hotspots and WAN on home networks. They have screwed the data valve down to the point its not worth it for a lot of subscribers anymore. Maybe competition and Android will bring prices down on phones and tablets to where they should be in the first place. For a lot of people, staying connected 24/7 isnt worth the cost anymore.

the title of this blames loss on pensions, but says nothing about what it cost them. Just a chance to blame the average worker again.

If they account for the cost of the subsidy over the life of the 2 year contract - the same period they expect to make money via usage fees, why would increased sales be a negative? It should impact cash flow - not income...

The only way that works is if they really never expected to make money (eg, they are losing money on each sale even after spreading the acquisition cost over the life of the contract...

Aren't pensions and social security the communist way?
