The primary food source of betaine is choline, a nutrient found in vegetables and animal liver. In the human body, choline biologically converts to Betaine (tri-methyl Glycine) and studies going back to 1954 have established that alcohol consumption increases the requirement of choline intake. Choline belongs to a group of nutrients known as Electrophilic Methyl Group (EMG), which have been suggested to eliminate a by-product of alcohol metabolism called NADH, responsible for accumulation of fat in the liver. NADH is a molecule that is normally associated with the production of energy (citric acid cycle) but it is also produced, in excessive amount, in the case of alcohol consumption and thus interferes with the normal metabolism of fat in the liver (Fatty Liver).

On June 5, 2001, FDA offered National Academy of Sciences the opportunity to comment on the authoritative statement cited by the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine, relating to Dietary Reference Intakes for several nutrients including Choline. FDA received no comment from National Academy of Sciences. FDA reviewed the authoritative statement from Dietary Reference Intakes for Choline and has not acted to prohibit or modify the claim.
Thus, under the Provision of The FDA labeling guidelines, any supplement that would provide 55mg of choline is considered a “good source” of Choline.
