    Vets Prevail CEO Richard Gengler Participates In Workforce Initiatives Roundtable Discussion with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta

    Vets Prevail Chief Executive Officer Richard Gengler participated in a roundtable discussion on employment opportunities for veterans on Monday, November 07, 2011 held at the Goldman Sachs headquarters in New York City.

    The roundtable discussion brought together business and community leaders along with U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta to discuss ways to create job opportunities for returning veterans. The discussion focused on what the private sector can do to help returning veterans get jobs and what the government can do to better prepare veterans for employment. Additionally during the discussion, Goldman Sachs Gives, the firm’s donor-advised fund, detailed more than $5 million in grants to organizations focusing on reintegrating veterans into the workforce.

    “This was an exciting discussion,” said Mr. Gengler,” I could feel the momentum building behind real solutions that are going to put a lot of unemployed veterans back to work.”

    During the discussion, Mr. Gengler provided an update on progress of a program he has created called Vets Prevail, set to be launched nationally this December with the support of Goldman Sachs Gives. Vets Prevail is a veteran based online program that provides mental health support to reluctant care seekers outside a clinical setting, preventing disorders like PTSD and depression. Veteran mental health problems and veteran unemployment are inextricably linked, with one often feeding into the other.

    “Our country owes a great deal to the thousands of men and women returning to civilian life from the armed forces,” said Lloyd C. Blankfein, Chairman and CEO of The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. “Veterans have the experience and abilities to help our economy grow, and the business community is focused on helping them to find the jobs and opportunities that employ their skills.”

    “Veteran unemployment is a complicated problem,” said Mr. Gengler, “and to get a handle on it we need to attack it on all possible fronts.”

    Everyone at the meeting agreed that the high veteran unemployment rate cannot be ignored. It was adjourned with an air of enthusiasm for further discussions, and further support for promising efforts.


     

    Vets Prevail (http://vetsprevail.com) is an innovative new online mental health tool that is tailored specifically to today’s Veterans, helping ease transition to life after military service and tackle post deployment re-adjustment challenges. The core content is rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, the standard of care for treatment of symptoms related to PTSD and depression. The program incorporates interactive multimedia e-learning lessons, peer support, diagnostic self-assessments, and proprietary software for scheduling and tracking user activities, thoughts, and feelings.
