Victim of fatal sports bar stabbing in Spring Lake sustained injury to his heart

A Lillington man who was stabbed at a Spring Lake sports bar last week died because the knife pierced his heart, according to an affidavit in the case

Sarker Kamrul Hasan, 36, of Spring Lake, is charged with voluntary manslaughter in the April 24 death of Derek James Frerichs, 37.

According to an arrest warrant, Hasan and Frerichs got into a physical fight inside Pyrates Sports Bar on West Manchester Road when the stabbing occurred. The affidavit states that Frerichs struck the first punch.

He was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where he died from his injuries, the record states.

A woman who answered the phone Wednesday at Pyrates Sports Bar said Frerichs worked there as a bartender and bouncer.

The Sheriff's Office said that Hasan cooperated with law enforcement. He surrendered to authorities Monday at 10:51 a.m., and was released on $40,000 bail, according to the court record.

As conditions of his release, he is not allowed to go into any establishment that serves alcohol and is prohibited from purchasing or consuming alcohol or drugs, the record states. He is also not allowed to possess firearms, the record states.
