Mater Dei and St. Mary's battle it out for state supremacy.

It didn't go to double overtime like three other California state championship games last weekend at Haas Pavilion.

And it didn't even go overtime like the much-anticipated boys Open state title game.

But for those who watched No. 3 St. Mary's (Stockton) defeat No. 7 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 75-69 in the California Open Division championship game — and there were more than 7,000 there on the campus of the University of California — all came away impressed.

Very impressed.

It was probably the best girls game I've ever witnessed in terms of skills, back-and-forth action and talent. Not counting an All-Star game, though there was a lot more defense in this one.
