The debaters considered the following motion: “Indiscriminate Collection of U.S. Phone Records Violates the Fourth Amendment.”

Following the traditional Oxford-style debate format, the interactive program askedthe audience to vote both before and after the debate, thus judging which team has had more influence in their argument.

Stewart Baker, former assistant secretary of Homeland Security and former NSA general counsel, and John Yoo, professor of law at UC Berkeley and former Justice Department lawyer, argued against the motion.

Alex Abdo, staff attorney at the ACLU Speech, Privacy and Technology Project, and Elizabeth Wydra, chief counsel at the Constitutional Accountability Center, argued for the motion. John Donvan of ABC News moderated the event.
