In a nation more associated with calamity than consensus, the initial results of Saturday's Afghan presidential election are startling. Despite Taliban threats to attack polling stations nationwide, the same percentage of Afghans turned out to vote - roughly 58 percent - as did Americans in the 2012 U.S. presidential race. Instead of collapsing, Afghan security forces effectively secured the vote. And a leading candidate to replace Hamid Karzai is Ashraf Ghani, a former World Bank technocrat who has a PhD in cultural anthropology from Columbia University, a Lebanese Christian wife, and an acclaimed book and TED talk entitled "Fixing Failed States."

Former 'Top Gear' Team Heading to Amazon
After what has seemed like months of speculation, Jeremy Clarkson and his former Top Gear cohorts finally have a new motoring show and a new home. Clarkson, plus his fellow hosts Richard Hammond and James May, have been snapped up by Amazon for a three-season deal for its streaming service Prime Video. Amazon and Netflix had been the favorites to take the trio, who were behind one of the world's most successful and the BBC's most lucrative factual TV shows, after it emerged that a clause in their contact with the broadcaster stipulated that they couldn't make another motoring program in the U.K. for two years, ruling out ITV.

Water Parks And Piano Class: Colorado Movie Gunman's Childhood

And many remembered the shooter as a smart, shy kid who studied music, was never in trouble, and who no one dreamed would grow up to massacre a dozen people. Defense lawyers trying to save the life of Colorado movie rampage gunman James Holmes have called witness after witness to take the stand just feet from where he sits, tethered to the floor, expressionless.

China: U.S. 'militarizing' South China Sea
China's Defence Ministry on Thursday accused the United States of "militarizing" the South China Sea by staging patrols and joint military drills there, ramping up the rhetoric ahead of a key regional security meeting in Malaysia next week. China has repeatedly urged Washington not to take sides in the escalating maritime dispute over the area, where the Asian giant last year stepped up its creation of artificial islands, alarming neighbors and provoking U.S. criticism. Washington has demanded they halt land reclamation and militarization of the disputed area and pursue a peaceful resolution according to international law.

Ashley attended the makeup marathon tutorial after getting glammed up by Mario for the 2015 Tony Awards: The beauty look he crafted at 7 a.m. lasted through the day, night and a change of time zones as Tisdale flew home to Los Angeles to watch the Tonys after attending the awards show in New York. There also may be a chance she wanted to spruce up her skills so she could offer beauty tips and tricks on her new lifestyle website, The Haute Mess. The newly strawberry "bronde" star described Kim without makeup as "very beautiful"—and we have to agree. Colorado Theater Shooter's Dad Saw Wide-Eyed Smirk Before
James Holmes came home on winter break from graduate school looking haggard and making odd facial expressions, but his father didn't suspect at the time that he was descending into mental illness. Robert Holmes said, "He was not a violent person. At least not until the event." "The event" is a phrase he used several times to refer to his son's attack on the audience inside a darkened Colorado movie theater, which killed 12 people, injured 70 others and makes James Holmes eligible for the death penalty. Months later, Robert Holmes said he recalled that look when his son flashed a wide-eyed smirk in a booking photo at the jail. District Attorney George Brauchler pointed out while cross-examining Robert Holmes on Wednesday that the bug-eyed mugshot wasn't taken immediately after his arrest, because his hair was no longer comic-book red. Was he posing, perhaps trying to appear crazy? Robert Holmes deflected the prosecutor's suggestion, saying he knew nothing about how the photograph was taken.

The Degrassi Reunion Is Complete!
Today just so happens to be the one month anniversary of that epic Degrassi reunion photo shoot that we all lost our minds over, and while that was probably one of the best things that has ever happened to us, there was something missing. A ton of original cast members all gathered for a photo shoot to promote the retrospective special airing this Friday, and unfortunately, Cassie Steele was not among them. Steele played Manny Santos, who was BFFs with Miriam McDonald's Emma Nelson. Both McDonald and Steele posted pictures of the two of them hanging out on Instagram, and so many feels came rushing back.
