video footage recorded by a bystander at the time of the event. The victim of the shooting, Eric Harris, 44, is alleged to have been trying to sell an illegal handgun to an undercover police officer on April 2.Harris is reported to have fled the exchange upon the arrival of uniformed police officers. He was chased by police, caught and pinned to the ground. As police officers were attempting to handcuff Harris on the pavement, Robert Bates, a 73-year-old reserve deputy, arrived to assist them. One of the officers called for a taser. Bates reached for his taser but mistakenly fired his gun instead, shooting Harris. Bates can be heard immediately apologizing after realizing his mistake. After the shooting, officers continued to pin Harris down. He died at a local hospital an hour later. Bates has since been charged with second-degree manslaughter.
