Bangladesh observes Martyrs Day

Thousands of Bangladeshis observed Martyrs Day today and paid tribute at a memorial for intellectuals and professionals, killed during the 1971 Liberation War. Bangladesh marks the day to remember hundreds of teachers, doctors, engineers and artists gunned down or bayoneted to death by the Pakistani army in 1971. The national flag along with black flags was hoisted at half-mast today. Former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia laid wreath at the memorial at Mirpur martyred intellectuals' graveyard, keeping alive the decade-old animosity. A parliamentarian, Bithi said they had assembled to pay respect to the martyred intellectuals.
