Fashion maestro's tower plan makes waves in Venice lagoon
SCRIPT:French fashion designer Pierre Cardin is no stranger to controversy, and his latest project, Le Palais Lumiere, or Palace of Light , is no exception;A 255 metre luxury skyscraper located just outside of Venice. And despite fierce criticism, the 90-year-old remains upbeat.SOUNDBITE 1 Pierre Cardin, Fashion designer (French, 11 secs):"Have you seen The Bubble Palace in Cannes? They wanted me to pull it down. I wouldn't budge, and said 'put me in prison and then you'll see.' Now they ask that it be made an historic monument."Le Palais Lumiere should be complete in three years and will be built at an industrial port 6 miles from Venice, at a cost of between 1.5 and 2 billion euros. At three times the height of the tallest building in Piazza San Marco, it will be home to a luxury hotel, appartments and even a fashion university.UPSOUND Pierre Cardin, Fashion designer (Italian, 5 secs):"That'll be my appartment…near to the sky!"To appease the naysayers, Cardin's promised the skyscraper will help clean up the polluted industrial area, and will generate 5000 jobs,Which might provide some comfort to the thousands of factory workers laid off in recent years following the closure of the petrochemical plant at Porto Marghera. SOUNDBITE 2 Giorgio Orsoni, Mayor of Venice (Italian, 16 secs):"This is an interesting project that may mark a period of recovery, a renewal of urban fabric, and a sign of innovation. "But that doesn't wash with many Venetians who want to safeguard the traditional architecture of their city and skyline.SOUNDBITE 3 Alvise Benedetti, Italia Nostra Assocation (Italian, 11 secs):"A person can't just come along like that and decide to do something that makes no sense. Venice is worthy of respect, it's a town with more than 1000 years of history."Those who are keen have a slice of Le Palais Lumiere will have to dig deep, a medium-sized appartment will cost around 2 million euros; They'll be buying into what could be an historic monument or perhaps an unwelcome eyesore.SHOTLIST:VENICE, ITALY, 27-28 AUGUST 2012.
