French fashion uses power of 'knitting grannies'
**PLEASE NOTE: PARENTAL PERMISSION TO SHOW THESE CHILDREN IS ONLY GIVEN FOR THE CONTEXT OF THIS NEWS REPORT** SCRIPT: Just two years old -- but already posing like a professional model. Léon is showing off the summer collection of a new line of kids' clothing here in France -- nicknamed the 'Granny Factory'. The idea is that it's all hand-knitted -- by people who have plenty of experience doing what they do. SOUNDBITE 1, Jocelyne Bertin, Knitting granny (French, 11 sec): "I've always knitted a lot, ever since my children were born. It's relaxing….I don't know how to watch TV without knitting any more!" The creations are aimed at children aged up to four years old. They're designed by a stylist, and knitted by a network of around forty grandmothers across France. For the company founder, it's about harnessing modern design to old-fashioned experience. SOUNDBITE 2, Stephanie Leone, Founder, Mamy Factory (French, 22 sec): "Granny Factory is about making knitting less old-fashioned. I thought, since these senior citizens are getting younger and younger, more and more active even after retirement, why not take advantage of their talents, and get them to make products which correspond to consumers' desires to get back to authentic, commonsense clothing." Clothes are knitted on demand, based on the number of sales made through the company's website. And the watchword, they say, is quality. SOUNDBITE 3, Pauline, Customer (French, 16 sec): "It's always very well made, very stylish -- I really like the unisex style of these clothes, I can use them for my sons as well as my daughter -- and I really love the materials they use." The textiles, including mohair, alpaca and cashmeer, all come from French producers, and the resulting clothes will set you back between 10 and 120 euros. The grannies themselves make around four or five euros per ball of wool used -- not enough to live on, but a nice supplement to a state pension. SOUNDBITE 4, Jocelyne Bertin, Knitting granny (French, 9 sec): "My knitting brings me a little bonus which I put in a savings account, and which lets me have a little fun from time to time -- which is nothing to be sneezed at." So far it's all been online -- but the brand is planning to open a shop in central Paris, where the grannies can show off their needle skills, and even share techniques with some of the customers.
