Hobbits Demo Airplane Safety
Hobbits have climbed out of their holes and onto our airplanes. In a new safety video for New Zealand Air, the characters from 'The Hobbit' take to the skies to teach passengers about emergency exits and seat belts. Look very closely for 'Hobbit' director Peter Jackson. He made 'Dead Alive'! Now his cinematic life centers around wizards. Weird career, dude, weird career. Plus, in our second story, a department store coffee shop thinks you're too dumb to speak Italian.

Fantasy League Loser Poses For Hilarious Calendar
In some Fantasy football leagues the only penalty for losing is being out some money, but for Henry Stern, the penalty was so much more embarrassing. He had to pose for this ridiculous calendar. Henry has been playing fantasy football for almost a decade with friends from college in a league where the loser has to do something embarrassing. This year Henry was the loser, and the loser had to make a calendar for the rest of league. Want to see the rest of the calendar? Go to Henry's Instagram: allstern.
Mom, Son Both Find Mammoth Tusks 22 Years Apart
22 years ago, Luann and Brian Harrelson were trawling in a bend of the Fish River near White Mountain, Alaska, when they saw what looked like a strange, smooth log. Well, imagine their surprise, when the smooth log turned out to a 79-pound woolly mammoth tusk. Luann took a picture with the valuable artifact and her 3-year-old son, Andrew, before selling the tusk. 22 years later, Andrew and his fiancé were on the same bend in the Fish River this week when they found a Woolly Mammoth tusk of their own. Amazing discoveries in the same place found 22 years apart by the same family - incredible!
Canada's 60-Foot Snow Pile Won't Melt
Officials in Winnipeg, Canada have a snow problem. In one of the city’s four snow-dumping sites, there is still a 60-foot high, dirt-covered snow mountain, and they’re worried it won’t melt by the time it starts snowing again. And yes, it's mid-August -- come on, Canada! The snow dumping sites are used to store snow that was plowed from city parking lots. What should Winnipeg do?
$100,000 Maserati Painted Like A Police Car
Braintree, Massachusetts policeman Blake Holt did a double take when he saw a Maserati painted exactly like a cop car, driving around the town square. Knowing full well that the department hadn’t seen budget increases large enough to start buying its officers luxury automobiles, Holt decided to pull the unnamed driver over, and arrest him for impersonating a police officer. This is a crime in Massachusetts that comes with a maximum $400 fine or a year in jail. But what happens if the vehicle is painted like a cop car from Transformers?
Affectionate Marmot Interrupts Time-Lapse Video
A marmot ruined a beautiful time lapse scene at Glacier National Park in Montana, by trying to get to second base with the camera. The video was uploaded to the Internet this week by environmental organization Greenpeace, who initially were trying to film the scenic time-lapse images as part of a campaign against coal mining. Little did they know that the beautiful landscape would be ruined by a marmot in love. Oldest European Eel Dies At Age 155
The oldest European eel died this week. Åle the eel passed away in a well in the town of Brantevik, Sweden. Åle the eel was 155 years old. 155! In 1859, 8-year-old Samuel Nilsson threw Åle in the well, because at the time, it was commonplace to keep an eel in your water supply to fend off insects. While having an eel in your water supply was relatively common, having an incredible old eel certainly wasn't. So, Åle became pretty famous… for an eel. RIP, you record-breaking eel!
$211k Solid Gold Shirt For A Birthday Present?
Indian textile magnate, Pankaj Parakh, celebrated his 45th birthday this week by wearing a custom shirt made of 18-to-22 carat gold...and going for a stroll. Pankaj had the shirt custom made by a team of 20 people, and it took 3,000 hours and over two months to make. While apparently the shirt remains completely flexible and comfortable, it does weigh almost 9 pounds so it’s still really heavy. Which might be due in part to the nine solid gold buttons. What do you think of this birthday present?
Artist Remixes Thrift Store Paintings
Canadian artist David Irvine is becoming famous for what he calls “Re-Directed Paintings” where he adds a pop culture twist to old paintings. It turns out one way to make those boring nature scenes from art found at thrift stores and yard sales more interesting is by adding The Dukes Of Hazzard, Luke Skywalker, or a Monty Python Reference.
