Huckabee Stands With Kim Davis, Kicks Off Rally to Support Clerk

Those who support Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis gathered outside the Carter County Detention Center in Grayson, Kentucky, on September 8 for a rally organized by Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. The rally happened as Davis was released from jail after being found in contempt of court last week for not issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Huckabee met with Davis in the jail before her release and stood with Davis as she left jail. Presidential hopeful Ted Cruz also met with Davis before her release.

Davis was jailed on September 3 after refusing to issue marriage licenses despite a federal court order. She had refused to issue licenses since the US Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in June. US District Judge David Bunning ordered her to issue the licenses in August, but she told couples she had until September 1 to comply. She again refused to issue marriage licenses on September 1.

The deputy county clerks began issuing marriage licenses on September 4, one day after Davis was jailed. Bunning allowed Davis to leave jail so long as she does not interfere with the deputy clerks issuing licenses. Credit: Facebook/Mike Huckabee
