GOAL “Approximately one million people have been displaced; and another 254,000 have fled to neighbouring countries. There are close to 100,000 South Sudanese refugees in Ethiopia. It is estimated that up to 2,000 South Sudanese refugees are crossing into Ethiopia each day. The number of refugees is growing at such a rate the UN is predicting that Ethiopia will be hosting 200,000 by the end of 2014. The UN are now predicting than an imminent famine resulting from the ongoing conflict in South Sudan could cost the lives of upwards of 50,000 children under the age of five before the end of 2014.” GOAL reports that the organisation is delivering nutrition and medical care to 36,000 refugees at Kule camp in the Gambella region of Ethiopia. They note that: “At least 95% of the refugees are women are women and children. General health is not good, with respiratory illnesses, diarrhoea, measles and malaria prevalent, and arrive at the camp in very poor physical condition having walked for days from their homes in South Sudan.” The video above features a report on the humanitarian needs of displaced people.
