Matt Damon thriller 'Elysium' flies above 'Planes' at box office

by Wochit 1:11 mins

Matt Damon sci-fi thriller "Elysium," the story of an elite space outpost locked in battle with poor invaders from Earth, won a tight box-office race among four new films at U.S. and Canadian theaters. Elysium is slowly but surely climbing to the top of the weekend box office, according to early numbers from The Hollywood Reporter. The new Matt Damon sci-fi flick, directed by Neill Blomkamp, grossed some $11.2 million on its opening day. The film, also starring Jodie Foster and Diego Luna, is projected to net around 30 million. If you're ever caught in a life and death situation, you better hope a Hollywood movie star is around to save you! That's what Stephen Colbert was hoping for after featuring a segment on his show last night about celebrities who have been in the right place at the right time to rescue those in need. But as big a star as Matt Damon is, he had no interest in helping Stephen escape from a tipped over soda machine! All he wanted to do was talk about his new movie Elysium!
