Nelson Mandela Breaking News: In South Africa, Obama Pays Tribute to Ill Mandela

by Wochit 0:58 mins

Paying tribute to his personal hero, President Barack Obama met privately Saturday with Nelson Mandela's family as the world anxiously awaited news on the condition of the ailing 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader. As former South African leader Mandela is critically ill in a Pretoria hospital, seemingly close to the end of his life, many South Africans are caught in an emotional reckoning. They celebrate this father figure, whose jail-time sacrifice and peacemaking role in the transition from apartheid to democracy resonated worldwide, but they face the hard road of trying to emulate his example and implement his legacy after he is gone. President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama are meeting privately with the family of Nelson Mandela. The meeting is taking place at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, which is part of the former South African president's foundation.
