No, Contraception Is Not Healthcare

by Wochit

In the wake of the Hobby Lobby decision, there was a lot of chatter about how the court had ruled about what healthcare employers should or shouldn’t provide. To say that contraception is healthcare is not to say that contraception is good, or that it is bad; it is not to say that it should be legal or subsidized or free or not; it is simply to make a terminological point. “Healthcare” means, roughly, a direct, medical intervention to improve your health. The main purpose of contraception is not to improve anybody’s health, it is to prevent fertility. That’s a different thing. It’s not healthcare.
