NSA 'secret backdoor' paved way to U.S. phone, e-mail snooping
The National Security Agency created a "secret backdoor" so its massive databases could be searched for the contents of U.S. citizens' confidential phone calls and e-mail messages without a warrant, according to the latest classified documents leaked by Edward Snowden. The United States and Russia put a brave face on deteriorating relations, pledging to work together on shared interests even as they nursed frustration over deep differences on issues like missile defense, Syria and the case of NSA leaker Edward Snowden. Deutsche Telekom, Germany's leading telecoms operator, says it will start channeling e-mail traffic exclusively through its domestic servers in response to public outrage over revelations of U.S. spy programs accessing citizens' private messages. The company launched the "E-mail made in Germany" initiative after a month of public indignation over reports on intrusive U.S. snooping based on documents leaked by fugitive former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.
