With a nearly unanimous vote, the Senate has confirmed Penny Pritzker, a prolific Democratic fundraiser and the heiress to the Hyatt Hotel empire, to be the next Secretary of Commerce. Barack Obama heads to Africa for his first extended trip to the continent on a tour of three democratic nations that will offer a mix of cultural tourism and diplomacy. After touching down in Senegal, the United States' first black president will visit the Maison des Esclaves (House of Slaves) on the island of Goree. President Obama says he's "deeply disappointed" with the decision to strike down a provision of the Voting Rights Act, and called on Congress to revamp the law. The ruling "upsets decades of well-established practices that help make sure voting is fair, especially in places where voting discrimination has been historically prevalent," said the nation's first African-American president in a written statement.
