Pope Francis begins papacy
SCRIPT: Hours into the job but already fulfilling his duties as pontiff. Pope Francis began his first day with private prayers at a Rome basilica. Considered an outsider in the build-up to the two-day-long conclave, the nomination of Argentinian Jorge Mario Bergoglio was a surprise to many -- but perhaps recognition of the Church's rapid growth in Latin America. It also offers the Catholic Church a chance to distance itself from both the VatiLeaks and the clerical sex abuse scandals: VOX 1: Shane, from Ireland (man) [English, 20 sec]: "Just like any organisation, it's important that the senior people in the organisation are united behind a common cause and yes there's lots of sex scandals and other scandals facing the church and they have got to be addressed in as transparent and open manner as possible and all of the cardinals need to get behind the new Pope and support him." Many see Bergoglio's decision to adopt the name Francis in honour of St Francis of Assisi -- who dedicated himself to the poor and shunned riches -- as a good start to the papacy: VOX 2: Assunta, from Sicily (woman) [Italian, 15 sec]: "Firstly, his name is in itself a programme. As well as being the patron saint of Italy, St. Francis is a model of humility and saintliness par excellence. Humility and poverty above all else. His name is already a good omen." VOX 3: Pierre, student from Paris (man) [French, 7 sec]: "The choice of Francis is that of a saint who gave himself to the poor and to underprivileged -- it's a good program." Pope Francis is not expected to depart radically from his predecessor's stance on sensitive issues like abortion, gay marriage or the ordination of women priests. And while the man to many reamins a mystery, one clue to his character did come out in a post-conclave remark to the cardinals that elected him: SOUNDBITE 1: Federico Lombardi (man), Vatican spokesman [Italian, 14 sec]: "Après le conclave, il y a eu un dîner joyeux à la maison Sainte-Marthe et à la fin au cours d'un toast il a dit aux cardinaux : 'que Dieu vous pardonne pour ce que vous avez fait." "After the conclave, they all had a very jovial meal and at the end he said to the cardinals: 'May God forgive you for what you have done..'" Latin America's first pontiff is to be inaugurated next week in front of thousands of onlookers -- including world leaders. It will be then that the work of the 266th Pope will really begin. After a recitation of the Lord's Prayer, the famous chapel adorned with Michelangelo's frescoes began resounding with Latin song. The New Testament reading was from the Book of Matthew in which Christ says to Peter: "I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church." All the cardinals, as well as the new pope, wore simple light yellow robes over their cassocks. Francis was elected Wednesday by 114 fellow cardinals after two days of secret balloting in the chapel.
