World War II veterans heading to Washington, D.C., to remember their own battles were treated to a special send-off Friday. As 40 World War II veterans made their way to gate A6 at San Antonio International Airport on Friday, they were honored with a military parade. The veterans will be visiting the National World War II Memorial and about a dozen other landmarks over the weekend. Their trip has been donated by Alamo Honor Flight, a nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring American veterans for all of

SAN ANTONIO -- A local inventor has an idea he says every classroom needs. Kids won't learn anything from it, but it's something that could save a life. Mike Taylor says he's been working on a bulletproof shield for educators for a couple of years. But after 26 children and staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary were killed in December, it was time to get it finished. With small kids of his own in mind, he came up with a Kevlar composite material that weighs 14 pounds and can stop a bullet. "It'll stop .9

Bexar County is trying a new tactic for treating repeat-DWI offenders that focuses on rehabilitation rather than just punishment. Studies show that in San Antonio, one out of every five drivers arrested for DWI has been arrested before. "They will do their time. They come out with the same problem going in. And they will be the same risk level that they were going in, and they will go right back to it," Bexar County Judge Liza Rodriguez said. She said these high recidivism rates prompted a brand-new D

Jason Milligan is still recovering after he said he was beaten with a night stick and stabbed three times with a pocketknife by three classmates after school Tuesday. "They were cussing at me," Milligan said. "I thought I was probably going to get killed." He was saved only after his older brother stepped in and punched one of his assailants in the nose. Milligan's parents said the school is partly to blame.

Brooke Loeffler had to spend two days in lunchtime detention at her school last week. By her grandmother's account, she is a very bright student who rarely gets into trouble. So Brooke doesn't understand why she has to spend time in detention away from her friends, sitting by herself looking at nothing but a wall. After all, she's a kindergartener, and she's six years old. "It was my responsibility to get her ready and get her to school," her father explained. "I failed that responsibility a couple of times
