Gotham Awards: Netflix’s Ted Sarandos To Receive Industry Tribute
Netflix announced Wednesday that its chief content officer Ted Sarandos will be honored at this year’s Gotham Independent Film Awards. The executive will be presented with this year’s industry tribute, one of four pre-announced honors handed out at the Manhattan event, set for Dec. 1 at Cipriani Wall Street. The Gotham Awards traditionally marks the official start of Oscar season, recognizing the best in independent film. Sarandos has led content acquisition for Netflix since 2000 and has recently led the effort to develop original content for the streaming service, helping it garner 31 Emmy nominations.
Dubai, European Airlines Divert Flights Over Iraq
European and Dubai-based airlines have begun rerouting flights over Iraqi airspace as a security precaution, though Iraq says its skies are safe. An Emirates Airline spokesperson in Dubai told The Associated Press on Monday it will divert planes that use Iraqi airspace. A number of European carriers, including Virgin Atlantic, KLM and Air France also say they will do the same. Iraq is facing a security crisis after militants with the extremist Islamic State group captured large swaths of northern and western Iraq, including its second-largest city, Mosul. The head of the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority, however, maintains Iraqi airspace is safe. Nassir Bandar says: "There is no threat to airplanes passing over the Iraqi skies."

A broken 30-inch water main gushes water onto Sunset Boulevard near the University of California, Los Angeles campus in the Westwood section. The geyser from the 100-year-old water main made a raging river of the street and sent millions of gallons of water across the school's athletic facilities, including the famed floor of Pauley Pavilion, the neighboring Wooden Center and the Los Angeles Tennis Center, and a pair of parking structures that took the brunt of the damage.
Iraqi Kurdish Pipeline Stopped; Tanker In Limbo Off Texas
Iraqi Kurdistan's attempts to export oil independently of Baghdad hit another obstacle on Wednesday, as a Turkish energy official and industry sources said the autonomous region's pipeline to the Mediterranean has been shut for the past week. The Kurdistan Regional Government has not launched any oil tankers from the Turkish port of Ceyhan in over a month as Baghdad has moved to block the vessels from unloading at foreign ports. Arguing all oil sales outside its control are illegal, Baghdad this week tried to get a Texas court to seize 1 million barrels of oil aboard the United Kalavrvta tanker, which has been anchored off the port of Galveston since the weekend.

Lois Lerner used to head the IRS division that handles applications for tax-exempt status. In a series of emails with a colleague in November 2012, Lerner made two disparaging remarks about members of the GOP, including one remark that was profane. Republican Rep. Dave Camp, who chairs the House Ways and Means Committee, released the emails Wednesday as part of his committee's investigation. Camp says the emails show Lerner's disgust with conservatives.
