Social Issues Breaking News: Detroit Unlikely to Make General Obligation Bond Payments: Fitch
Fitch Ratings, a major rating agency said chances that Detroit, Michigan, will make full and timely payments on its unlimited general obligation bonds are low, a day after the city filed for the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. President Barack Obama made a surprise appearance at the White House Friday to discuss African-Americans' reaction to last weekend's verdict in the George Zimmerman case, saying that "Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago. Asked if the president had thoroughly contemplated his remarks, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said, ?I don?t think there?s any question, and you can judge by what he just said and how he said it, he knows what he thinks and he knows what he feels, and he had not just in the past week but for a good portion of his life given a lot of thought to these issues.? President Barack Obama addressed the verdict in the Trayvon Martin killing, speaking in personal terms about the experience of being a black man in the U.S., trying to put the case in the perspective of African-Americans. Obama saying that the African-American community sees the case through a set of experiences and history. Adding that there are very few African-American men in this country -- including himself -- who haven?t had the experience of being followed while shopping at a department store.
