US Vote 2012: Can we, really?
SCRIPT:This Barack Obama draws oohs and awes from the crowd -- a giant sand version that could fit in at Mt. Rushmore.Like those presidents, he's made history, too -- as the firstAfrican-American leader. For his supporters, the change he asked them to believe in four years ago is still to come.SOUNDBITE 1 Ashley McGurkin (woman), Social worker (English, 10 sec):"I think he has given it a really good shot considering everything he had coming into his election. So I think he deserves another four years".NAT SOUND: "Humanity comes first!"But these protestors, among them many young people, aren't as sure. They're taking a long list of grievances to the streets during the Democratic National Convention. Some voted for Obama in 2008, but say they won't again.SOUNDBITE 2 Jared Hamil (man), Political science graduate, found work in a warehouse (English, 17 sec):"You know, there is more empty houses than homeless people in this country. People are starving. People don't have access to healthcare, education. People are going into more debt and credit card debt now."NAT SOUND: I'm asking you to believe!"Obama's call is harder for those young voters to hear today.18 - 29 year olds face unemployment above 13 percent, and an uncertain economy. In 2008, 66 percent of voters their age voted for Obama.Recent polls say only 50 percent of them support him now.Political experts say their disappointment is normal.SOUNDBITE 3 Leonard Steinhorn (man), Professor of communication, expert of politics and campaigns (English, 7 sec):"Even if people like what he's done and agree with his policies, it's never gonna be as exciting as the first date".Kendrea still supports Obama -- like she did four years ago.But she has some advice for the president -- get tough.SOUNDBITE 4 Kendrea Mekkeh (woman), Journalist and blogger (English, 12 sec):"You are not gonna get another four years after this so go for the gusto and don't be afraid to be a little bit a Samuel L. Jackson and get some things done because waiting for a consensus isn't always a way to do it."Obama will get the chance to fire up 79,000 supporters at the convention, and millions over the airwaves. It's a golden opportunity to rekindle the magic of 2008 -- and just weeks later, every vote will count.
