War & Conflict Breaking News: Taliban Attack Shows Militant Spirit Unbroken

A Taliban attack at the gates of the Afghan presidential palace cast a cold light on the course of a war that Washington remains committed to ending. Gettysburg's small African-American community proudly tells stories of ancestors who fought in the Civil War, of a young woman who shook President Abraham Lincoln's hand and of the men who buried thousands of bodies after the battle. But they also speak of a struggle to preserve that history and of discrimination that continued long after the war ended ? even where Lincoln himself reminded Americans of our defining ideal: that all men are created equal. Insurgents launched a dramatic attack inside a heavily-guarded zone of the Afghan capital Kabul that contains the presidential palace, U.S. Embassy and headquarters for the NATO-led coalition forces. The resulting firefight sent journalists waiting to attend a press conference with President Hamid Karzai scurrying for cover, along with a young child.
