Jimmy Kimmel Reveals Vin Scully To Return For 67th Dodgers Season

Jimmy Kimmel tonight helped announce that longtime Dodgers play-by-play announcer Vin Scully will indeed be coming back next baseball season, marking his 67th year in the job. The pleasant surprise was revealed on the Dodgers videoboard during the second inning of tonight’s Dodgers-Cubs home game.

The short video showed Kimmel in his ABC studio, as he dropped cardboard signs saying that Scully “is back for one more year (at least). God bless us everyone.” The Dodgers followed the video with an announcement on Twitter:

In a statement, Scully cited his family in explaining his decision not to retire just yet. “I talked it over with my wife, Sandi, and my family and we’ve decided to do it again in 2016. There’s no place like home … and we look forward to being a part of it with all of our friends.” Second only to Tommy Lasorda in years spent with the team, Scully, 87, has been with the Dodgers since 1950, starting when it was still in Brooklyn and following it to Los Angeles in 1958.

Since reducing his travel schedule 6 years ago, he’s been on one-year contracts, but the decision to quit has been left up to him. Considered the voice of the team, he’s known for his signature phrase, “It’s time for Dodger baseball! Hi, everybody, and a very pleasant good (day/evening) to you, wherever you may be.”
