Violence in Yemen leaves 10 dead; protests persist

SANAA, Yemen (AP) — At least 10 Yemenis were killed Friday in fighting between government forces and tribesmen seeking to oust President Ali Abdullah Saleh, officials said, raising fears about a collapse of security during a popular uprising in the Arab world's poorest country.

The violence began when armed tribesmen attacked a military convoy, killing a colonel and two of his aides near Sharab, 12 miles (20 kilometers) northwest of Taiz, security officials said. Hours later, the Yemeni army fired tank and artillery shells into Taiz, killing at least seven civilians and wounding more than 30 others, according to medical officials.

Yemen's army has been shelling the outskirts of Taiz, Yemen's second-largest city, to try to dislodge the tribesmen who have joined forces with anti-government protesters.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.

The disintegrating security across Yemen has allowed armed tribesmen and radical Islamist groups to take over parts of the country's weakly governed provinces. The U.S. worries that Yemen's active al-Qaida branch will exploit the chaos to step up operations.

Despite the violence, tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets again in Taiz, the capital Sanaa and several other cities after weekly Muslim prayer services to call for Saleh's ouster after 33 years in power, in rallies dubbed "The Friday of a Civic State." Abdullah al-Sami, a Muslim preacher in Taiz, addressed worshippers by saying that the goal of ongoing protests is to establish a new state with equal rights for all citizens.

In Sanaa, thousands of pro-government demonstrators also rallied in a show of support for Saleh outside his palace.

Saleh has been receiving treatment in Saudi Arabia since July 5 after being badly injured in an attack on his palace. Pressure from the U.S. and Yemen's Gulf Arab neighbors has so far failed to get him to transfer power.

Islam is the most advanced and a true relegion. With a mosleum of the only prophet in histoy that can not be denied. It all matters to the preconcieved idea of some people. Other relegions are
right but depend on here say. I still respect them. But I do not agree with mob personality against moslems. There is no logical reason for that the current attitude of the ignorants against Islam. All relegions belong to yester years. The Islam is only the real relegion that does not plot against any crusaders. All crusaders will be destroyed by the God's will. The liers have no feet to stand on and the truth always victorious in the end.

Quote a corrupt regime rather than get the news from both sides AP. Failing as always to report the news in a balanced manner.

Islam is NOT a religion, it is a death cult. They murder Jews, Christians,
Buddhists, Hindus, atheists & if they can't find anyone else to murder
they murder each other. What religion would believe that Heaven is a cat house and God is a pimp? Only muslims!

The yemen protesters may have a bigger problem than Saleh. Even if Saleh would transfer rule and power. the new government would now have to deal with the militants. With out an equiped and disciplened military they would not be able to handle the militants. If the major tribe takes over and combines with the militants. Then you have a group of Islamic extremist forcing their will and Sharia law on the population. That type of rule would be even worse than Saleh. Eventually the militants and tribe will have to go against the protesters. The protesters may need to stand aside and allow the military to deal with the militants. While keeping their opposition movement peaceful. To accept the militants and tribes combination may result in an Arab war. Yemen and Saudi Arabia , which will draw in a number of nations and will jepordize Mecca, Medina, the Kabul and the Hajj. Plus the effects on oil production and export. Lets hope the Muslims in Yemen can see the position that the opposition is being set in. There is a benefit the opposition may not realize they have on their side . If the opposition and the Yemen military plus the tribes work with the US to eliminate Al Qadea through the CIA. the Arab world may avoid an Arab conflict of major proportions.
