Viral video: Father shoots daughter's laptop after she whines about parents on Facebook

Racking up over 3.5 million views on YouTube over the last 48 hours, a North Carolina man named Tommy Jordan, father of a fifteen-year old teenage girl named Hannah, decided to respond to his daughter’s complaints about their family life. His daughter posted a lengthy rant about her parents on Facebook and attempted to hide the post with the privacy settings Facebook provides for all users. However, her father somehow ended up with a copy to her diatribe and decided to film a video response called “Facebook Parenting: For the troubled teen”. He had recently spent over $100 as well as several hours of his time upgrading her laptop, thus the actions on the video were very much an emotional response to what he perceived was a lack of gratitude on her part.

Within the video, the daughter’s profanity-laced complaints were mostly focused on the amount of chores she had to do around the house as well as the lack of money she received for that work. Jordan expressed disappointment in her lack of interest in finding a part-time job while she’s attending school.

Jordan’s response to her sense of entitlement in the past was to ground her and remove the laptop as well as a cell phone from her possession. Since that previous punishment didn’t work, he decided to take her laptop out to a grassy field and fire nine exploding, hollow-point rounds into the black, shiny notebook with his .45 caliber handgun. Not only does the daughter have to earn her own money to purchase a new laptop, she also has to pay her father back for each bullet that he valued at $1 each.

When asked if the punishment was effective on his Facebook page, Jordan stated “I think it was very effective on one front. She apparently didn’t remember being talked to about previous incidents, nor did she seem to remember the effects of having it taken away, nor did the eventual long-term grounding seem to get through to her. I feel pretty certain that every day from then to now, whenever one of her friends mentions Facebook, she’ll remember it and wish she hadn’t done what she did.”

Since the release of the video, Jordan and his family have received an enormous amount of attention from the media and has even received an offer from CBS in regards to some form of show, likely an interview or reality-based series. In addition, Jordan has received attention from the police as well as social services. According to a post on his Facebook page, local law enforcement met with Jordan and social services is interviewed the child today. Jordan posted “Now I’m letting my daughter have her interview with Social Services, so they too can be satisfied that I don’t yell at her, beat her, traumatize her, lock her in a closet without food, deprive her of basic human rights, make her cut the grass with scizzors, hunt for her meals in the wild with only a spork, or otherwise fail to provide for my daughter.”

Comments on Jordan’s public Facebook posts have ranged from other parents supporting the decision to people concerned about the safety and well-being of the child. While the rapid success of the video has caused Jordan to take his phone off the hook for the weekend, Jordan is attempting to use this public forum to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. At the time of this article, he’s raised over $3,000 in the past two days since the video went viral. He’s even received a job offer for his daughter from an ice cream parlor and coffee house located in North Carolina.

Kids today have things wat to easy. Parents give the kids toys (cell phones, laptops, ect) to just keep them a way. The cost is: no respect, no cares, no responsibilites, no honesty, no morals. Now that the parent is being talked about from other parents to own family memebers, They all want to quickly react.. (hit the breaks parents) you caused this because you allowed the gap between your kids grow so far, now your back peddling to close that gap? REALLY? This is a comman battle for families.. People please REMEMBER.. FAMILY, FRIENDS, COMMUNITIES, FUTRUE COMPANIES are reading things posted on the WEB like reading a news paper. So for her posting FAMILY issues, yes that would be completely wrong unless life threating. For the father who shot the lapotop, PROP's, but money wise.. should have just wiped the hard drive and kept it for your self. PARENT's WAKE UP! !
I my self am a Father (19-G,18-G,17-B,15-B)so I know how hard it is. IT's VERY HARD.

I don't know about you guys, but instead of shooting it I would sell it. Either way it would have been gone forever. I guess shooting it makes more of a point, but in this economy I couldn't afford to destroy something I spent so much on.

jesus christ I am 15 and i have worse to deal with, but NEVER complain on fb about it. Some things need to be private. And too much chores? Seriously?! That is one brat. Kudos to that father for that.

I think your parent/parents should be very proud of you! Your entire comment about someone in your own age group shows a sign of maturity on your part, as does taking the side of her father! Also, the comment to you from MEME is something I would not hold against you - you were only making a statement! Thank you for your comment - it is nice to see that there are still some young people being raised with decent values and ethics, unlike the girl in the article! I give her father many Thumbs-uo for how he handled the situation!

That is a joke! Child services and the police called on him??? That man deserves a medal for what he did! I wish more parents would hold their children accountable for their actions like this!
      • Elaine 2 mths ago
The reason the police and Child Services called on the father for what he did was to be complementary, NOT to make trouble, for the way he handled his daughter! The article NEVER mentioned otherwise! In fact, he was contacted by others as well, such as the TV station, etc. They were basically giving him a verbal medal of approval for what he did! I think you misinterpreted that part of the article! In fact, the father was given a job offer for his daughter!
      • A Yahoo! User 2 mths ago
Oh yes, I understand, you mean it was just and interview with law enforcement and social services? they did not call on him, I misread it too, but yes he dose deserve a Medal, that kid was a Bratt!

WHY DO SO MANY OF YOU HAVE WEAPON-O-PHOBIA? good grief!! Its not like he threatened her with the gun! You can tell he would NEVER EVER EVEN CONSIDER SUCH A THOUGHT! HE DID WHAT HE DID BECAUSE HE LOVES HER! Why do you all think that just because someone has a gun(or guns) they are murderous killers? I own MANY guns, I don't even hunt. I just like shooting targets. I also own many swords, some I have made myself...so does that make me a psychotic maniac who is going to kill people? NO! If that was my child I would have cut the laptop in half with a sword...to make the same point.
So what if he used a gun! He could have used a baseball bat, or a pipe, or a hammer or run it over with a car...but he chose to use a gun. BIG DEAL! THAT ISN'T THE POINT! The point is that he made a strong statement by taking and destroying her laptop beyond repair. This is his PARENTAL RIGHT! Since when did we have more rights than our parents while we are still adolescent? We are a product of them...until we are adults they have the right to raise us in a manner that they deem best. Don't get me wrong, abuse is still wrong... but I'm not talking about abuse. This isn't abuse and this isn't wrong. Stop being such weak, yellow, rubber spined wimps! And I will say it; ANYONE who thinks what he did was somehow wrong: YOU ARE A RUBBER SPINED WIMP! go grow up and act like adults.

everyone has an opinion. i see nothing wrong with it. from listening to the dad and hearing him he has some sense. i have a boy so its different than a girl. i think he felt he had to make a point. so he did. the fact that the girl gets all this attention is not a positive. im 40, and kids now don't want to do anything that doesnt repay them. my son is 4. he and i are tight. he will be tired of me at times, but this not earning things and just expecting everything is not the road im going to try and take him on. we will c how it goes but i want him to respect people and himself and learn that he doesnt have to do things just because. she should be appologizing to her dad for putting him in a spot that he had to do that.
      • Elaine 2 mths ago
Right idea, Dad! Starting to teach them right from wrong should start early - when they are old enough to understand the consequences of incorrect behavior. Once they are in school is when the trouble starts - they start picking up bad habits and actions - from the other children they are with!

The "father" is a narcissist who wants to be praised for all of the things he does, and he uses his daughter to "prove" how underappreciated he is for how very awesome he apparently thinks he is. Providing care for your family is the baseline of what we are expected to do, and if you feel that you are not receiving enough adulation for that, then you need to grow up yourself,

Way to go Jordan!!. If he bought her stuff, that means it all belongs to him. If parents just let their kids do what they want, the kids would feel unloved. Weather you think so or not, kids want structure. They want rules. They want people around them that can guide them through life.

I say the father did exactly what he needed to do. It taught her a lesson she will never forget, remembering it everytime she sees a computer. The biggest problem today is Kids are coddled and pampered from birth. Most think that they are owed video games, computers, Iphones, etc. just because their friends might have one.

I had a friend take away his sons video games for misbehaving in middle school, that didnt work, so he took his sons computer from his room. After that went the sons TV. Did the son learn his lesson? NO he went and told his teachers that his dad was taking his stuff and the teacher reported reported the father to child services. There was an investigation and though no charges were filed, The father was told he could not arbitraily take his sons belongings. That it could be considered mental abuse, giving then taking away the items.

Way to go America, spare the rod, spoil the child....

I loved the video!!!! I have 2 teenage girls, the oldest which is 17, has had her entire room stripped of all possessions other then a blanket, pillow, and a mattress, (her punishment to earn her belongs back due to being caught stealing on a trip to DC, which I paid $600 for her to go) We have to show some tough love, you can't physically punish your children like we use to get. I remember getting my butt tore up by whatever was handy, either you were stupid to make the same mistake or u got smart quick. This DAD just ROCKS

I have mixed emotions upon the shooting of the laptop, as that is an investment. However having children myself, of which grounding never worked, revoking privileges etc, Rarely made for any change nor improvement. As it is generally taught in school that children no longer have to fear their parents, nor any kind of corporal punishment, other than a grounding which most children seem to "sneak" about and still acquire access to things via friends and school. Back when we were children, well I was a child spankings were given as needed. Now we cannot spank, so children no longer have fear of punishment, however if a parent does not submit to the child's whims they can call the authorities and the parent is instantly treated as a guilty as soon as they walk in your door. I have seen this happen many times, when our teens learn they can do this. It ends up costing so much emotionally, and financially, not to mention this is always on a parent's record, even if found innocent. Yes, it always remains a foot note on your record. Nice, eh. Children now days have absolutely no respect for anyone or anything especially their parents, as society keeps stripping away at parental rights. So now we have a generation of unappreciative, ignorant, arrogant, obnoxious, not to mention foul mouths, So in plain English BRATS running amuck. As parents we are to be the ones in charge setting the rules and respected, not the other way around, as it is the children are running the show and it's about time we adults get off our lazy laurels and take back our rights as parents, and show these kids right from wrong. It's not going to get better.. so. my hat is off to this man.

I thought I was going to see something funny and it got to me right in the pit of my stomach. I'm not sure if what we're doing today is the right thing to do. This really caused me to ponder discipline then and now.

In my generation most of us used spankings for such behavior and it worked. My daughter's would never do something like this. However, both my daughters decided they would not use corporal punishment with their own daughters. Now I have to say it wouldn't surprise me to see their daughters post such things. One girl would never do it, but the other two, each with a different daughter of mine probably would. Or let me say, I would not be surprised in the least.

And since this generations of mothers don't really know how it was done in the past, we didn't spank 15 year olds usually. By the time they were 12 or 13 they were well behaved. They would never think of doing this. This isn't about just me but all those other mothers that I knew. I know their children would never do it. And yes, you would hear of a rare occurrence of a mother spanking her 15 year old but it would generally be for something dangerous, cutting class, smoking, maybe even stealing (which I don't recall any of my friend's daughters or sons stealing after 15 years old).

Anyway with that said, look at what this father is doing. He is at the end of his ropes. He feels disrespected and hurt. Instead of punishing the child, it becomes one of making the child feel guilty for hurting her dad. Yes, he was strict, if he keeps to it and makes her pay for the things he shot up, but it is still an appeal to her emotions to feel bad about how she hurt her parents. That is guilt.

That puts a lot more emotional pressure on a child than a spanking that puts absolutely no emotional pressure. I know from my own girls telling me that while they didn't like them the spankings cleared the air and they knew everything was erased. It helped them be rid of the guilt and I remember from my own parents that is just how I felt. I didn't like getting caught, but I knew after the spanking was over, the anger was gone and the parents still loved me. All I had to do is do better in the future.

Why would I think bringing back the barbaric spankings are better, all I can think of is that it worked for thousands of years and only about the past 30 or 40 years, did we decide it was wrong. Maybe this is just a fluke and we'll find this was a big mistake.

I just really, really, feel sorry for the father as you can see his hurt and disappointment and I never had that in my life, and it was only because I raised my girls differently. Plus and see this same sort of stuff play out at my two daughter's homes with their kids. I just don't think respect by guilt is the best way.

What a Bratt! I'm glad the father did what he did, plus it was freaking hilarious reading that, I'm 19 and my parents are strict with me, I know it means they care about me, Teenagers need to learn in life that not everything is free. I have a part time job, and I'm about to get a full time job, and my parents paid for the laptop I'm using, I would never put my family down on a youtube video that is so rude and selfish, he should have posted a video of him shooting the laptop, I would have loved to see that, kids of this generation are just getting snobby, and rude, even though I'm a teen I honestly hate teenagers because of their immaturity, irresponsible attitude, and rudeness, i get along better with people older then me, my 14 year old sister posts everything on fb and it annoys the crap out of me, so I tell my parents and they ground her, but she ends up doing it again, I think my parents should just take her iphone away, and keep her from using my laptop, shes always getting in a mess of trouble, I kinda wish my parents would get her under control like that father did with his daughter.
