Dominion Virginia Power to install state's largest rooftop solar project in Gloucester

GLOCESTER, Va. (AP) -- Dominion Virginia Power has announced plans to install the largest roof solar system in the state in Gloucester.

Virginia's largest utility said Tuesday the 2,000 solar panels will be installed on the rooftop of Canon Virginia Inc.'s Industrial Resource Technologies building. The panels will generate more than 500 kilowatts of electricity, enough to power about 125 homes.

Power generated by the $2 million project will flow to the electric grid used by Dominion customers. Construction is scheduled to start this month and be fully operational in early 2014.

The Canon project is part of Dominion's Solar Partnership Program, which is designed to broaden the utility's understanding of community-based solar energy.
