Vt. Sen. Leahy to seek maple protection law

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy says he's planning to introduce legislation to make it a federal crime for people to mislabel products as containing maple syrup.

Leahy said Tuesday the legislation is needed to protect Vermont's maple crop from fraud.

The move came in the aftermath of a recent U.S. Food and Drug Administration investigation that found a man who had been selling fake Vermont "maple" syrup, when the product contained no syrup.

Leahy's proposal would create a new federal felony offense and increase the sentences that prosecutors can seek for people who defraud consumers and farmers by intentionally mislabeling maple products.

Leahy, a Democrat, announced his plan at the same time he was announcing the state had received a $70,000 federal grant to help market Vermont maple syrup.

Mislabeling a product is already illegal under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. It sounds like Senator Leahy wants to make the penalty greater. This sounds excessive to me. Why should mislabeling pancake syrup be any worse than mislabeling other products? Leahy appears to be seeking to throw his weight around.

This is so painfully obvious! If this is a crime, we already have statutes for fraud; we do not need to invent a special class to protect the maple syrup marketers of Vermont.

Really we need a another federal law ? Leahy is a 100% Vermont pure jackass.

When Leahy quits blocking qualified conservatives from being confirmed as federal judges . . . when Leahy supports strong defense of U.S. borders . . . when Leahy quits running interference for the crooks-in-charge at the Justice Dept. and the White House . . . then pigs will fly and I still won't support his syrup protection legislation. I have been to Vermont and toured a maple syrup factory--very nice indeed and a fine product--but it can do well enough on its own as it has for centuries.

I can't believe this dimwit is worried about maple syrup, and the economy is falling apart. Another clueless liberal democrat puppet.

Time to get the ATF involved with maple syrup smuggling. It will now be called the bureau of Alcohol, Tabacco, Firearmes, and Syrup.

I was going to buy a bottle of authentic maple syrup last week, but the bank turned me down.
    • Peter H  •  4 mths ago
I love real maple syrup! And I hate those who try to pawn off beet sugar or corn syrup as maple syrup. But I'm not sure it takes the US Senate to enforce it....

If you're an illegal alien who sells fake maple syrup, does Leahy's bill give you immunity from prosecution?
