VW recalls 168,000 cars for fuel leaks

DETROIT (AP) — Volkswagen is recalling 168,275 cars equipped with diesel engines because of a defect in the fuel injection system that could cause fuel leaks and fires.

The recall affects certain 2009-2012 Jetta midsize cars, and some 2010 through 2012 Golf small cars, as well as some Audi A3 models from the 2010 through 2012 model years, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Thursday on its website. All are equipped with 2-liter TDI diesel engines.

Cracks can develop in the fuel injection system and cause fuel to leak, possibly causing fires, VW said in documents filed with federal safety regulators.

However, the company said in the documents that it doesn't know of any fires, crashes or injuries caused by the problem.

Fuel injectors squirt fuel into the cylinder, where it is ignited. The resulting explosion pushes the pistons, which move to power the cars. On some of the VW diesels, a vibration given off by the injectors can cause stress that eventually can lead to cracks in the injector fuel lines, VW said.

Volkswagen will replace a fuel injector line in some models and install dampers to cut the vibrations on all of them. The repairs will be made free of charge. The recall is expected to start in November, NHTSA said.

The recall includes 161,144 Golf and Jetta models and another 7,131 Audi A3s.

The Jettas, including SportWagens, were made from May 2008 through September of 2011, while the Golfs were made from May of 2009 through September of 2011. The A3 models were made from September of 2009 through September of 2011.

About 20 percent of the cars built during those time periods will need to have fuel lines replaced, and all will the vehicles will get the vibration dampers, VW said.

More than 20 percent of the Volkswagens sold in the U.S. have diesel engines.

The European diesels would be about the only VW I would even want anyway. Most in the USA are from Mexico or Brazil. I saw an Eos that was made in Portugal. Certainly not Germany now, is it. Hungary, too. Not bad places, I guess, just not places I would trust the workforce in. Not the best level of education or technology.

        And you would trust USA???
      • hollander 7 mths ago
Now I would. Yes. Quality has greatly improved.
      • Itchy 7 mths ago
Of course it has. Same companies, same workers, same cars more funding yet quality is better, right, just because they were bailed out of failure. Great thinking, you're a genius. Reality is, america never knew what quality is in the first place, the country with most gas guzzlers in the world, huge engines, little power, huge cars little inside space. All the american car companies did was buy some time restructuring yet they make the same scrap nobody wants. Emerging plants in Hungary, Brazil, Portugal or Czech, are working their behinds off and not unionized or gobbling the paychecks fat lazy deadbeat americans want. Just wait...we'll see in a couple of years.

Itchy--Do us all a favor and help raise the worlds collective intelligence quotient by drowning yourself
your ignorance is abysmal, your brain--all two cells of it--withered and your value to anyone measured in negative integers. You probably even believe Ovomit is a good president.

New VWs look cheesy, just like the Japanese cars. Life is too short for a Camry or Accord, but I would drive one any time before a low priced VW. I need reliability in a car. Hecho en Mexico VWs do not give me that. Beetles are junk.
      • none 7 mths ago
thanks for the reminder that the beetles are junk, that is a car that should be bought back by vw.

As the owner of one of those new beetles I would have to agree... it is 18 months old and has been to the shop more times then my 12 year old explorer....

Yet another example of why a car company MUST NOT cut their R&D budgets! HELLO! Didn't ANYONE learn from the MILLIONS Toyota has spent on all its recalls? SHEESH! And i won't even bring up the Big three, everyone knows that JohnQ public is their R&D department!

They should recall their 2007 PASSAT 2.0 tdi shame on you VW. Fraud

VWs are way over rated. I think people who buy them figure they more snob appeal. Audi, too. Many of the lower models are just VW mechanicals w a few sheet metal changes.

This ought to go very nicely with their half-century reputation for quirky electrical systems.

The author obviously is ignorant about how fuel "burns" in an internal combustion engine.
As any mechanic or engineer knows, fuel burns, creating gases which expand very rapidly upon injection (diesel) or spark ignition (gasoline or "petrol").
      It does NOT "explode".
      • Itchy 7 mths ago
The process of burning in a short period of time in a closed pressurized chamber is equivalent to an explosion. In case of car cylinders, fuel never burns completely this is why new technologies try to recoup the wasted unburned fuel and or gas/oxygen mixtures and reuse it in the propulsion process and yield more efficient engines which consume less because they operate in a cleaner manner. Burning as well as explosion are interchangeable. Gases don't expand, you incompetent idiot upon injection or spark ignition but AFTER the explosion or burning has occurred. I should stick a fork in you, you deadbeat gas waste, fart in the wind.
      • douglas 7 mths ago
itchy you are so wrong, fuel dose not explode it burns, this is why we have octane ratings for gas. when fuel preignites it creats two flame paths that collide and cause knock. do some basic research before you shoot your mouth off.

Itchy--the depth of your ignorance is truly astounding--you obviously have no background in either science or engineering. There is a difference between explosion and expansion of gases. Morons such as yourself spread disinformation which leads to the expansion of further stupidity by those who are too inexperienced to see you for what you are---a microcephalic remnant of the primordial ooze who needs to slither back under the rock from whence you came. Do us all a favor and beat yourself to death with a rock clutched in one of your tentacles.

        still junk.

Really ? My garage kept 2005 VW Jetta TDI still gets 57 mpg. I plan to keep it to a million miles. It looks fabulous. Do you have better ?
    • Michael  •  7 mths ago
Why would they recall cars to give them fuel leaks? Do they get too good of gas mileage?
