VW recalls 30,000 Jettas to fix long tailpipes

DETROIT (AP) — Volkswagen is recalling more than 30,000 Jetta sedans from the 2011 and 2012 model years because the tailpipes can stick out too far and burn people.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says on its website that stainless steel exhaust pipe tips installed at ports of entry and dealerships can stick out farther than the factory-installed tailpipes.

If the tips are hot, people could be burned on the legs.

Documents on the website say Volkswagen received complaints of burns in July and began investigating. Volkswagen said Monday that fewer than 10 people have complained of burns, but a specific number wasn't available.

Dealers will inspect the cars to see if the exhaust tips are too long and replace them free of charge if necessary.

No, probably a conspiracy Obama's a part of. It's bad press for a corporation, and Obama hates corporations.

Nope this one is Obama's fault!

Yet they wont issue a recall for the 2009-2011 Jettas that have self destructing Fuel Pumps!
      • Louis G 8 mths ago
Are you talking about the high pressure fuel pumps on the cars with 2.0T FSI engines?

VW used to be known for a quality product...emphasis now is on growing the Bu$ine$$. The same trap ensnared Toyota.
      • JoMama 8 mths ago
VW has never been known for quality. Check out vwsucks.com.

        You both are morons!
      • chuck 8 mths ago
Art T. Said "You both are morons!" Perhaps! Ask my wife!! But as a Brand Loyal VW owner of over 30 years (Rabbit, Golfs, Jetta, Passats) I watched price go up, up, up and quality (last Passat 4-motion) decline. I dare not hazard a guess as to what 3rd world country assembled it!!
Re:Toyota remark. My employer does work for Auto industry. Toyota has very stringent standards. And toots its horn telling customers about it. Sometimes products are not up to standard. Experience tells us that a quick phone call and a "deal" and Toyota accepts them for use. You get any "deals" from them lately???

Having owned VWs all my life, a 2001 model was the absolute LAST for me. I'd say a too long tail pipe is the least of their problems. At the top of the list for me: a once solid, dependable auto has been engineered into a high maintenance, short lived piece of #$%$It's a shame when companies destroy the integrity of their good product; then again, why sell someone a new car every 12 years when you can force them to buy every 5...?

VW owners declare: "We want phat pipes, not long pipes!!!!" The backlog of coffeee can mufflers will mean a long wait for VW owners to receive this repair.

Jetta was the WORST car I have ever owned.
VW should be recalling all Jettas since the 1995 model year for their faulty transmissions, engine coils, exhaust and electrical systems. The US should be looking into the fact that VW refuses to cover the terms of any warranties.
My advice (based on personal experience) would be to avoid any and all VW / Audi products.

Tony you are 100% correct. Best car I ever owned 1984 Jetta Diesel. Worst car was a 2002 Jetta Diesel (electric and transmission). Worst dealer network went to four dealers to get it fixed and was jerked at everyone while under warranty had one dealer try to tell me it was from a vacum line that was not connected to the aircleaner, then tried to charge me a couple of hundred for their diagnosis. By the time I got done yeliing in the service department they just gave me my keys. I also dealt with VW america, they were as useless as the dealers. I will never buy another VW and tell everyone I know not to if they are thinking about it.

Sorry that happened to you too capthook36. I know only one satisifed VW / Audi owner. Literally every other person I have encountered has some horror story. Including one former employees of VW of America here in Auburn Hills Michigan.
I have since owned two trouble free Subarus. I would recomend Subaru. Dealers are nothing special. Cars are great.

Tony, I agree that Subarus are great cars. Had one for 7 years and it was solidly built and reliable. However, I now own an Audi and I am extremely happy with it also. It is the best looking and best handling/most fun to drive car I have ever owned. Have had it for 2 years now.

      FIRE HOT...
    • Louis G  •  8 mths ago
That's just retarded. They aren't even original equipment. How do you recall a vehicle for something your customer adds onto the car after purchase??
    • A Yahoo! User  •  8 mths ago
Quick, recall all motorcycles, the tail pipes are exposed. Oh my god the pipe is exposed at the head and then as it wraps towards the tip. Quick outlaw all motorcycles. What happened to people. Fire is hot, trains will run over and kill you. Jumping out of a car at 60mph is dangerous and getting close to a car that has just stopped is dangerous. The mag rims on a car that has been rolling down a long hill using it's brakes will burn you if you touch around the disk brake. Cars are dangerous, not a toy. I guess it is natures natural selection process. We are messing with Natures Process. If people don't learn that heat is hot then where are we headed?
    • eric  •  8 mths ago
it can burn people.wtf are you going to moonwalk around every corner of your car?you can burn yourself checking under your hood.recall your engine while your at it.

If only there was a measuring device, possibly a foot long or 1 yard long, that could have been used so this didn't happen.

the new Ford Focus is sooooo superior to this VW. Actually its interesting, go to Edmunds and compare the 2012 Focus with a BMW 3 series. Size, performance, technology, its amazing

why won't GM fix the chevy ss?
    • CF  •  8 mths ago
The hot protruding tailpipe is meant to kill mosquitos and ward off evil spirits. There would be 10x as many mosquitos around Jetta owners homes if not for these tailpipes. And let's be frank, how many people who own a 2011 or 2012 Jetta has a possessed person living within 2 miles of their jetta? It works. Germans are smart. These tailpipes were designed by German catholic priests with expertise in exorcism. I think this Jetta was inspired by the new Pope. By the way, people who get burnt by a hot tailpipe probably are not very smart.

Who wants to bet that the next one will be a tad too short, allowing hot gas and fumes to damage side panels, and to poison passengers within the vehicle?
