CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia education officials are working to incorporate more locally grown food into school meals.
"Farm to School" is one of many child nutrition programs offered through the state Department of Education.
The department says among the school cafeteria food produced locally includes lettuce in Tucker County, potatoes in Cabell County and strawberries in Fayette County.
On Tuesday, state schools Superintendent Jorea Marple plans to join students for lunch at Mason County's Leon Elementary School. Principal Don Bower says the school's locally grown products include the beef for hamburgers, wheat for the flour to make buns, and watermelon and peppers for the salad bar.
