Wal-Mart greeters still greet, but duties change

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Those who greet customers at the entrance of Walmart stores nationwide are uneasy about a change in their duties.

Greeters no longer man the front doors during the 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift at the stores, and this month they were moved deeper into the stores to help shoppers find what they're looking for and navigate the aisles.

"They'll still greet. That's still an essential part of their position," Wal-Mart spokeswoman Ashley Hardie told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (http://bit.ly/wZ3uMR). The move inside and the new duties were implemented in the past two weeks, and no positions were eliminated, Hardie said.

Some greeters are not happy with the changes and have voiced their concerns through OUR Wal-mart, an organization funded by the United Food and Commercial Workers union, which has tried to organize bargaining units representing Wal-Mart Stores Inc. workers.

Gloria Pascale, 86, of Renton, Wash., who has worked as a greeter for 15 years, said she has to work to pay her mortgage and help support her children and grandchildren.

"I'm worried," she said. "I like greeting. With the changes, I won't be able to do that."

She said she was recently told at work that her duties would include some lifting and other activity beyond what she's physically able to do. She said she is under treatment for congenital heart failure.

Seattle resident Barbara Holland said she started as a cashier in 2000 but moved to the greeter position after she suffered an injury in 2004 and had three surgeries on her shoulders. She said she can't be on her feet for extended periods of time.

Holland said she recently stopped the theft of a $399 Xbox Kinect at her door.

Theft prevention is not a primary function of store greeters, Hardie said.

"We have asset-protection teams that are trained to monitor that. They do an excellent job," she said.

Employees won't have to take on additional duties, such as lifting, Hardie said Sunday. Company officials will still try to accommodate workers who have physical difficulties with tasks, Hardie said.

David Strasser, managing director for the retail sector for Janney Montgomery Scott LLC, a financial-services firm, said Wal-Mart's move "is definitely worth testing."

"The consumer is a funny animal and it's always unclear how they will react," he said by email. "Of course, there is some risk from possibly higher shrink (theft) or lower customer satisfaction. But it is a lot of dollars, worth seeing if the shift helps customer service and sales."

Camille Schuster, who runs retail consulting firm Global Collaborations Inc. in Escondido, Calif., said she applauds the company for experimenting but said it should have tested the move on a limited scale first.

"The greeters are a Wal-Mart fixture in the consumers' heads. Why are they doing this across the whole chain without knowing the consumers' perception? I think it's a rash move," she said.

Hardie said the company already is getting feedback from store employees on the changes. Many have said the move allows them to interact more with customers.

Richard Brown, a greeter in Tempe, Ariz., said he welcomes the changes.

"My primary feeling is the new position is going to give us a greater opportunity to help our customers feel that this is family, like I think Sam Walton originally intended," said Brown, 76, who has worked at the store for 10 months.

A Walmart in Florida has a door checker that can't walk without braces, let alone stand up. When he wants to see your receipt you have to walk over to him, bend down and give him the receipt. Then shuffle all your stuff out for him to look at it, then put it all back in the bags. Excuse me? Your loss prevention, retail security and asset loss services and you expect the customer to do your job? This equal employment crap has to stop somewhere depending on certain jobs that requires some mobility and movement. What gets me is when you walk by, or the buzzer goes off he yells at you expecting you do jump out of your shoes to his commands instead of him approaching you and identifying himself.

I like the greeters at Wal Mart especially if they are elderly or disabled this opened up employment for those who may not have had another opportunity, don't make them do other things just let them welcome us to the store!!!
      • bryan e 3 mths ago
Most don't speak, just push a cart at you sometimes, if they are not busy talking to the other elderly people coming into the store.

I'm curious as to why an 86 year old woman is having to support her children & grand children. Seems to me, they should be supporting her (IMHO)!

Many of the greeters have handicaps that prevent them from walking around. What happens to them?

The usual purpose of greeters is that people are less likely to steal if they have been personally addressed by someone in the store. Ever go in the bank and everyone is really, really, super friendly? That's to deter potential bank robbers. It'll be interesting to see if thefts go up after this hasty, probably not well-thought-through move by Wal*Mart.

One of the reasons I shop at Walmart is because they try very hard to accomodate people with disabilities. A couple of our greeters are in wheelchairs, one is a disabled vet. Most of the rest are elderly. This is a bad idea, Walmart.

Why is a 86 year old woman having to work to support her kids and grandkids? Sounds like she has raised a wonderful bunch of lazy idiots.

I don't care what anyone says, I like Walmart. I don't care if i am greeted at the door or not, but, if I can't find something, I would rather be able to find an employee in the aisles to ask. Yes, some could be more knowledgable, which is a training issue to be addressed. At the Walmart stores I shop, I never see employees standing around doing nothing, as some have expressed in their comments. To all of the Walmart bashers, go to Target where you have NO door greeter and No one in the aisles to help you find something, and higher prices.

I work at a Walmart in the pharmacy. We have a bad theft problem at our store already. I have a feeling it's only going to get worse. Leave the people greeters at the door. They are first in a long line of associates to deter theft. Also, Walmart is not part of any union.

The problem with Walmart is that so many times they are out of stock on many of the items I'm looking for and it takes a long time to get them back on the shelf. I end up going across the street to target to get them so Walmart loses many sales, not just from me but I'm sure from many other shoppers as well.

you opened a brand new store in my hometown of connersville, indiana recently. your old and smaller store had a better selection than your new one has.bring back your old store in to your new building and you can add new items where you have room. right now, it's nothing more than an over-sized dollar store only more expensive. i miss my walmart. you have too much junk in this store. get someone who remembers how to stock or you're gonna lose a lot of customers. take my word. there's a lot of unhappy former or soon to be former customers who will drive 45 miles to richmond, indiana and give their business to target or k-mart if things continue as they are. numerous times i've gone in there asking " where is this or that at " only to be told " oh, we don't have that anymore ". your older store was a whole lot better!!! your other stores might be successful but this one is doomed to fail unless you make some changes. mark my word!!!

"We have asset-protection teams that are trained to monitor that. They do an excellent job," she said. LOL! Makes me laugh. Their asset-protection is so great in Topeka a guy walked out the day after Thanksgiving with $200k to $500k in cash.
I have also been in the store and witnessed theft and told an associate and they stated "security" was not there. So I approached the thief and demanded the product back. Which he gave to me and I brought back to the associate.
Walmart asset-protection team is a joke!

I work at Wal-Mart for 6 years now and I think it's a bad move because it will cause more people to steal and we will end up losing more money if they do away with the greeters
    • A Yahoo! User  •  3 mths ago
Um....what are the other employees doing within the store? This makes absolutely no sense. Again, more paper pushers with no clue making policy trying to justify their jobs, while real working people get shafted.
      • Um...riddlemedis! 3 mths ago
Was wondering that, too. Greeters are now sales-people and security, it seems. Wonder if their pay goes up...

I don't want some person following me around the store asking if they can help me find something!!If I can't find what I came for, I'll ask! The older persons should be Greeters only....

I use to work for Wal Mart and all they care about is money. This is a horrible move that will result in more thefts and loss of money, which in turn will lead to layoffs and the cutting of even more hours for the employees. It's bad enough that they have people working in multiple departments and being pulled to unload trucks simply because wal mart is too cheap to hire more workers! Thank God I don't work there anymore.

They want to have all part time people so they don't have to pay any benefits. They only care about getting richer. Sam Walton would kick their butt if he were alive.
