Wal-Mart pulls formula after baby dies in Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Wal-Mart and health officials awaited tests Thursday on a batch of powdered infant formula that was removed from more than 3,000 stores nationwide after a Missouri newborn who consumed it apparently died from a rare infection.

The source of the bacteria that caused the infection has not been determined, but it occurs naturally in the environment and in plants such as wheat and rice. The most worrisome appearances have been in dried milk and powdered formula, which is why manufacturers routinely test for the germs.

Wal-Mart pulled the Enfamil Newborn formula from shelves as a precaution following the death of little Avery Cornett in the southern Missouri town of Lebanon.

The formula has not been recalled, and the manufacturer said tests showed the batch was negative for the bacteria before it was shipped. Additional tests were under way.

"We decided it was best to remove the product until we learn more," Wal-Mart spokeswoman Dianna Gee said. "It could be returned to the shelves."

Customers who bought formula in 12.5-ounce cans with the lot number ZP1K7G have the option of returning them for a refund or exchange, Gee said.

The product is not exclusive to Wal-Mart. The manufacturer, Mead Johnson Nutrition, declined to answer questions about whether formula from that batch was distributed to other stores.

"We're highly confident in the safety and quality of our products," said Christopher Perille, a spokesman for the company based in the Chicago suburb of Glenview.

A second infant fell ill late last month after consuming several different types of powdered baby formula, but that child recovered, health officials said.

Powdered infant formula is not sterile, and experts have said there are not adequate methods to completely remove or kill all bacteria that might creep into formula before or during production.

Preliminary hospital tests indicated that Avery died of a rare infection caused by bacteria known as Cronobacter sakazakii. The infection can be treated with antibiotics, but it's deemed extremely dangerous to babies less than 1 month old and those born premature.

The bacteria are "pervasive in the environment," Perille said. "There's a whole range of potential sources on how this infection may have got started."

A spokeswoman for the Food and Drug Administration said the agency is investigating the death, along with the Centers for Disease Control and the Missouri Department of Health. Investigators have collected samples from the family and are testing unopened formula purchased at stores.

Siobhan Delancey said the FDA gets four to six reports a year of infant infections related to formula and has not found a powder that tested positive since 2002.

The FDA is also investigating the other case of illness, which involved a baby from Illinois whose case was reported in neighboring Missouri. But the agency does not believe there is any connection between the two, Delancey said.

Public health investigators will look at the formula itself, as well as the water used in preparing it and at anything else the baby might have ingested, Perille said.

Only two to three cases a year are reported. New Mexico saw two in 2008, including one infant who died and another who suffered severe brain damage. A Tennessee infant died in 2001 after being infected.

It could be several days before test results are available.

The family submitted two types of infant formula for testing — the powdered version and a pre-sterilized, ready-to-eat liquid — as well as the distilled water used to prepare the powdered product.

"We're just trying to test anything that was consumed by the baby," Laclede County Health Director Charla Baker said.

Avery was taken to a pediatrician Dec. 15 — a week after he was born — after showing signs of stomach pain and lethargy. When the pain persisted the next day, his parents took him to an emergency room.

He died Sunday at a hospital in Springfield after being removed from life support.

The Missouri Department of Health advised parents to follow safety guidelines for preparing powdered infant formula, including washing hands, sterilizing all feeding equipment in hot, soapy water and preparing enough formula for only one feeding at a time.

A flood of calls from worried parents prompted Missouri officials to clarify that the formula pulled by Wal-Mart is not being provided to participants in the Women, Infants and Children federal program for low-income parents.

you can not blame walmart for tainted products they buy from companies just like everyone else, blame the people who made the product .
      • Wayne 5 mths ago
Most of the bad product comes from China, and Wal Mart is China's biggest customer.....
      • Fawbots 5 mths ago
Regardless the origin--tainted is tainted. The distribution of products with a ommission of testing a certain percentage is criminal. Ethics and greed counteract each other as the population grows.
      • bp 5 mths ago
In this case it seems it was tested and negative. Since it's a rare infection, blaming doesn't seem like a constructive solution.

Wow. I'm always amazed at how some people can be so insensitive. This poor family is having to bury their baby today. I don't know what the family's situation is or whether the mother tried to breastfeed but I find it appalling that some of you can even broach the subject right now. I agree that breast is best but that is a very personal choice for each mother to make. Have some decency and politely extend your condolences to this grieving family or just shut up. Now is not the time to further your personal agenda regarding breastfeeding.

NIce and appropriate post. What bothers me is that too many people place their trust in purchased food products instead of being wise and utilizing what is known to be safe. When it comes to a newborn baby, why take the risk of formula mixed with water that may or may not be safe for the baby?I'm an old man now and have had too many food borne illness's to remember and I watch what my children eat (7 & 12) for fear that they will eat some type of contaminated/adulterated food product. Chemicals to boost protein test results, anti-freeze used for sweeteners,saw-dust used as extenders, "solution" in meats: they are all out there...
      • veela 5 mths ago
        @samfan: Amen to that.
      • SamFan 5 mths ago
Texan, I agree with you. I personally breastfed my child for several weeks but had several health complications which ended up killing my milk supply. My child had to have formula from that point on. This wasn't my preference but it was the way things worked with this baby. My family eats organic and we eat whole, non-processed or minimally processed foods. I agree that our "food" in this nation is appalling. Still, I have no idea what this family's circumstances were and my heart breaks for their family. This baby died in my hometown and was from less than an hour away, so I think it's really hit home for me. My prayers are with this baby's loved ones.

Condolences to the family of this baby. Feeding a baby is a nuturing act. This is a parents worst nightmare. Strength be granted to them to cope.

Why are people in these comments blaming the mother for not breastfeeding? There are many reasons some women are not able to breastfeed. Some never develop enough milk, some had problems in their breast prior to pregnancy (i.e. cysts, etc). Some may have had breast surgery either reconstruction due to an accident or breast implants which may leave a woman unable to breastfeed. Whatever the reason blaming the mother is just ASSuming you have all the information you need to access the case.
      • Aeriel Moon 5 mths ago
I'm not blaming the mom, maybe this woman couldn't breastfeed so it's not her fault. I'm just using this case as an example to show why it's impportant for those who CAN breastfeed, which is most moms, that they should breastfeed, it's much safer. Why take the risk when you don't have to. That's all I'm saying.
      • Shannon 5 mths ago
Breast milk is not an option in all cases but it is possible. Babies have lived off of breast milk for the majority span of the human race. Something is wrong here.
      • DianneH 5 mths ago
Why focus on whether or not the mother could or should breastfeed? Any formula out there should be safe for an infant to consume. That mother is suffering enough already with having lost her child and doesnt need to hear anyones opinion about whether she should have breastfed or not.
    • Laura  •  Birmingham, Alabama  •  5 mths ago
A lot of people are commenting that this would not have happened if the mother would have just breastfed the child. Well that is not true.
I am a pediatric nurse and I took care of 2 patients that got botulism from breastfeeding. The botulism spores were on the mother's breast and when the mother fed the child they ingested the botulism. Both of these children were on a ventilator for over 1 month and could have died if their parents hadn't brought them to the hospital so quickly.
Botulism paralyzes the entire body including the diaphragm so you can not breath with out support from a ventilator.
This family has had a great loss and the mother should not feel that in any way this was her fault.
      • Texan 5 mths ago
Did anyone tell the mothers the importance of hygene? Come on: botulism from a contaminated breast: a little lye soap does wonders...
      • Laura 5 mths ago
        Texan,
Soap and water does not remove the spores from the air which can fall on to the breast in seconds. And lye soap would not be a good thing to use on a breast that is about to feed a child. Not to mention that the lye soap can irritate the breast causing the nipple to crack which in turn could lead to mastitis.
My comment was to show that children can become ill or die even through breast feeding.
      • Julie B 5 mths ago
so you're saying the botulism spores that were on the mothers' breast may not have been preventable, as it can float on the air? Scary.

Soo how do they know that the death has been directly caused by the formula? It could be a number of things that could have caused it...
    • randyr  •  Springfield, Illinois  •  5 mths ago
I use to boil my babies bottles after I washed them.I dont see many mothers doing this anymore.
    • Nacht  •  5 mths ago
I love how half the comments are turning this into a "well they were stupid and this is why breastfeeding is CLEARLY superior *smug smile*" argument. Seriously? Condolences to the family, I'll save my judgments for my own decisions, thanks.
    • veela  •  Oshkosh, Wisconsin  •  5 mths ago
To the Breast Nazis: Not all women are capable of breast feeding. I became seriously ill after childbirth and could not breastfeed my daughter although I desperately wanted too (I was once a Breast Nazi, too). By the time I recovered a month after her birth, she wouldn't take to the breast no matter what I tried (And believe me, I tried. Plastic nipples that fit over the areola, that tube that goes over your shoulder to the breast, the works.). And what about the women who adopt or who simply do not produce enough milk? Some women choose to use formula; but many do not. Either way, it's nobody's business and who are we to judge? This poor little baby died and I'm sure his parents do not need people saying "Well, if you had done THIS or THAT he'd still be alive." Who needs that? Really, people.

Emfamyl is used worldwide, I am cerain it was a bacteria in the water. It will take several days to gt reports we will see. Bad news for Emafamyl, however as said, certain it was no distilled water used in liquidifing milk powder.
