    Wal-Mart Stores ending MP3 sales

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is ending its digital music sales this month after seeing increased competition.

The world's largest retailer confirmed Tuesday that it will stop selling MP3s as of Aug. 29. Customers who already bought digital music through its site may continue to use and manage their music there.

Wal-Mart began selling digital music in 2003 to compete with Apple's iTunes, which has become the largest seller of digital music. The company also faces tough competition from Amazon.com.

The company said it will now concentrate its digital efforts on its Vudu.com video-streaming service, which it acquired last year.

NPD industry analyst Marshall Cohen said the dynamic of retail is changing, and sometimes companies are better off focusing on what they do best rather than offering something that doesn't deliver an above-average experience for consumers.

"It is very easy to become antiquated very quickly in the entertainment industry," he said. "If you are losing ground, and they probably were losing ground more rapidly year after year, it's probably better to regroup and retool."

If China can't manufacture it, WalMart can't sell it...

To be as large as this company is they have to know when to stay in and when to bow out of certain areas and this is something other companies could learn from. Like APPLE, stick to what you know and are good at.

Why buy from WM when there are good companies to buy from?

I've bought almost all my MP3s from Wal-Mart-- and no, you racist bigots, I am neither black nor from any Redneck kind of place! I've bought LOTS of music from there that's not rap, hip-hop, etc. I buy eclecticly-- classical, country, Christian, Celtic, some pop, and other things. I liked that they were just a tad cheaper than ITunes (for the amount of music I tend to buy in an average month). But mostly, I liked that their software didn't keep trying to take over my PC and/or require me to use their music program, like ITunes & Amazon do (I have a Zune, my daughter has a generic MP3 player, and use MS Media Player on some of the PCs I work on). I could download their music without any major conversion issues to the different MP3 players we have had in our home. They were also easier to search, and most of my screen showed the music available & the search results, and was not monopolized by ITunes' player or a bunch of other crud, like Amazon's page is. They had some accurate recommendations that were easy to find, too (something that cannot be said for ITunes' recommendations, which keeps referring me to the same Top 40 crud, even when I've made eclectic purchases or gotten pop songs from earlier eras-- why would someone buying Randy Travis or Peter Paul & Mary want to buy LL Cool J for cying out loud?). I for one will miss them.

at least wal-mart didnt have its head so far up its #$%$ to concede to the fact that it was losing money and it stopped doing the thing that was making it lose the money....america should look to wal-mart for its financial education

Who buys that rap crap anyway?
    • Jimmy  •  9 mths ago
How could they have possibly been losing out on selling MP3s? No manpower for transactions, already had a music collection... this move sounds really stupid.

Oh well, Amazon was already better.

This is just a stupid statement. If racism and bigotry is the sign of a weak mind, yours is on life support, pal.

I'm not black and I still think you are an Idiot, A-Hole
      • Anne 9 mths ago
Thank you, J. Thank you, Friscoamm. Your intelligent comments are nice to see... Hey Chris, you are a bigot. But you probably already know that, and only post your hateful racist rantings on comment posts where you can hide behind an anonymous icon (I dare you to stand on the South Side of Chicago and yell that crap at the top of your lungs; no... even you're not that stupid). Try joining up with your fellow morons in the KKK or the Nazis. Oh, yeah, that's right... They are both LOSERS and DINOSAURS, so they're not taken seriously any more. Kinda makes you feel like you belong with them, I'll bet. (1) GET A BRAIN, (2) Catch up with the rest of civilization, and then (3) GET A LIFE.

Btw, this is from a white person, too. Most white people do NOT agree with you, and you know it (hence the anonymous posting). You're like those online bullies that the news talks about-- quick to post, slow to actually say it to anyone's face. Post your actual name and then say it again (don't forget to link to it on FB, so all your friends can see it). I dare you. Watch how quick you lose friends and get called a "wacko", a "racist", and a "bigot" to your face. Then, as one SNL alum so elegantly put it... "Buh-bye."
