WaPo: Iran May Be Near Nuclear Capability With Foreign Help

Intelligence from the International Atomic Energy Agency provided to United Nations nuclear officials shows that Iran is on the brink of nuclear capability thanks to assistance from foreign scientists, The Washington Post reports.

IAEA records indicate that the Iranian government has been receiving aid for years from foreign scientists on building and testing nuclear weapons; according to the intelligence, former Soviet nuclear scientist Vyacheslav Danilenko played a crucial role in helping Iran develop the kind of high-precision detonator needed to trigger a nuclear reaction, and test its performance, the newspaper reports. Allegedly, the Iranian government has already incorporated the device into their warhead design.

The report suggests that experts in Pakistan and North Korea may also have provided help, according to The Post.

U.N. officials told the newspaper that the records reinforce concerns that Iran has been experimenting with nuclear-weapons development research since 2003, when international and domestic pressure supposedly lead the country to terminate all such tests.

Iranian officials dismissed concerns stemming from the report. Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi, Iran's former nuclear top official, told the Mehr News Agency this weekend that the debate is “100 percent political” and that the IAEA is “under pressure from foreign powers.”

Republican presidential hopeful Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, also waved away apprehensions that Iran is developing nuclear technology, saying that the media is “blowing it out of proportion.”

During an appearance on Fox News Sunday, Paul suggested that the U.S. should be “offering friendship to [Iran]. Didn’t we talk to the Soviets? Didn’t we talk to the Chinese?”

Iran denies, the West says they are working for a nuke. Everyone knows that they are and nobody will do anything until the give one to Hezbola and they set it off. Then everyone will know for sure because WWIII just started.

That is a very good point... If there are two known nations seething with years of hatred towards each other and peace is an obvious dead end, why not simply destroy them both? They will eventually achieve this in time anyway, lets do the neighboring nations a favor and remove this evil.... oh wait... this is really a one sided hatred. Is any nation or president innocent from meddling in the affairs of other nations? No! so stop trying lying to us and yourself about wanting peace and situations that will better the entire world. There are too many world powers with different views and desires. They will fight for more resources, land, water, food, oil, technology, money, you name it... Sad to see it all go up in flames, but that my friends and fellow humans is where its going.

AHHHHH....No wait, i get it. it was IraN not IraQ with WMDs. Bush, Cheney, rummy and condi had it correct after all. they were just off by one letter in the county's name. #$%$ those spell checkers. We accidentally invaded the wrong country. God bless them they finally found those elusive WMDs.
      • . 6 mths ago
WMD's include chemical weapons. If Saddam Hussein didn't have WMD's, then what was he using on the Iranians, let alone his own rebellious cities.
      • James 6 mths ago
Libya claimed to have destroyed all of it's chemical weapons as well. How has that held up so far?

I have the million dollar question! Who gives a s@#$?
      • Vanlandinghale Breck 6 mths ago
The answer: Those that know Iran will launch nuclear warheads at the US, causing a reaction from the US to launch an assault as well as nuclear war against Iran, thus causing the global environment to get more screwed up. :)

I expect a check for a million dollars by Friday.

Good lets attack them, kill hundreds of thousands and spend 3 trillion to find those WMDs just like we did in Iraq.
      • James 6 mths ago
Let's not, and let them nuke Israel and perhaps Saudi Arabia. Great strategy Art!

Paul is an idiot. Obama DID try offering the olive branch to Iran after he started in office. They insulted him and American, and wholly rejected his outreached hand. Iran should be dismantled immediately for all its violations under international laws. If someone doesn't stop them soon - the middle east is going to be a glowing glass parking lot because of them...

Paul is politically naive and opresso it actually is funny for you to take the name of an elite military unit to spout islamix foolishness

Ron Paul just lost my vote! Unlike the old China and Russia, the Iranians don't want world dominance, they want the infidels DEAD. The fear of death stops normal human beings. Our normal policy of mutual assured destruction only stops sane individuals. This doctrine does not hold when people are willing to blow themselves up in order to kill their enemy. There are no threats or sanctions that you can impose on them. Their religion, society and efforts are all dedicated to killing us. If they have nuclear capability, the 9/11 attack will look like nothing. Once you let the genie out of the bottle this technology will proliferate to every terrorist in every Mideastern country in the world !!!!
      • Jeff 6 mths ago
Kate, although their leaders can easily talk their ignorant followers into killing themselves, with promises of heavenly "benefits", I don't know that they would so readily invite death for themselves.

"U.N. officials told the newspaper that the records reinforce concerns that Iran has been experimenting with nuclear-weapons development research since 2003, when international and domestic pressure supposedly lead the country to terminate all such tests."

So, another great foreign policy blunder by W and cronies. Instead of destroying Iraq, which had held Iran in check, he should have been concentrating on Iran which posed far greater dangers. Maybe if he hadn't been so eager to prove his manhood by launching two unwinnable wars that he thought would be like Reagan's excursion into Granada, we wouldn't have the mess we have now.

Nobody in their right mind is going to fall for attacking yet another country with the same story. In general I think Ron Paul is an idiot, a likeable idiot but an idiot nonetheless, but on this issue he is on target - we need to stop hyping up nationalism and fear and start learning how to play well with people who choose to live differently than we do.

In the end - you are either dull-witted and assume that the US is God's chosen land, or you realize that God is indifferent and has absolutely no nationalistic preferences for how people live. But all those countries in the past who have made the mistake of thinking God had finished his/her work with them have fallen by the wayside. Let's try to avoid falling into the same potholes...

Iran will block the Straight of Hormuz in case of any attack. So there will be no attack. 40% of the planet's oil supply passes thru it. Any major conflict with Iran will destroy our and the world's economy. All of this talk is wishful thinking, nothing more.

really Ron?? i think you just lost my vote
    • DDJ  •  Blythe, United States  •  6 mths ago
Ron Paul would have been one of those demonstrating against the us getting involved in WW2- yeah, there were some foolish demonstrators that did that, and Ronnie here sounds like a good candidate. Be friends with Hitler, yeah, that's a good line, Ronnie.
    • James  •  Lombard, United States  •  6 mths ago
I wonder what business dealings Ron Paul has with the Iranians that would have him publicly come out and act so contrarian to everyone elses beleif system regarding Iran. I wish Reagan had dealt the Iranians a crippling blow as soon as he had taken office.
