War crimes charges for ex-Maryland man at Gitmo

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Pentagon prosecutors have filed war crimes charges against a Pakistani detainee at Guantanamo who graduated from a U.S. high school, accusing him joining al-Qaida and taking part in a series of post-Sept. 11 terror plots.

Majid Khan, 31, faces up to life in prison if convicted of charges that include murder, attempted murder and providing material support for terrorism. The charges were submitted Tuesday but a Pentagon legal official must still review and approve them before the prisoner can be arraigned before a judge at the U.S. base in Cuba, a process that is expected to take several months.

Khan lived as a child in the suburbs of Baltimore, graduating from high school in 1999 and working at gas stations in the area owned by his family, but he is a citizen of Pakistan. Prosecutors say he joined al-Qaida on a trip to his homeland, working directly with senior members of the terrorist organization.

He is accused, among other things, of plotting with Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the self-proclaimed mastermind of the Sept. 11 attack who is also held at Guantanamo, to blow up underground fuel tanks in the U.S. and of volunteering to assassinate then President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan.

Khan was captured in March 2003 and held in a clandestine CIA prison, where his lawyers say he was tortured. He was transferred in September 2006 to Guantanamo, where he was with two of his lawyers, Wells Dixon and Katya Jestin, when he was served with the charges Monday.

"We are reviewing the charges, and will represent Majid throughout this process," Dixon and Jestin said in a statement. "Majid is doing well considering these challenging circumstances."

"providing material support for terrorism" Isn't that what that congressman did? He didn't get anything.

The US revoked his citizenship. The citizenship of every hostile Muslim, every illegal that was given amnesty and every anchor baby given papers in violation of the 14th Amendment must have theirs revoked also.

I'm sure glad we allow Muslims to emigrate to the US and add their special charm and grace to the marvelous mosaic that is the American Way of Life. How enriching and spiritually uplifting it is for them to be here and add their voices to the multicultural chorus.

To be honest, I don't really see what you bring to the table, either, buddy. And it's "immigrate" to the U.S., not "emigrate."

I am sure that was said with a heavy dose of sarcasm?

Hang the muzzy savage and call it a day, and encourage the rest of them living in the US to exit asap!

Execute him. He is the poster child for why America needs to restrict immigration from certain countries. Some cultures will not assimilate into American society.

"Ex-Maryland man." What does that even mean? I used to live in Washington. Does that make me an ex-Washington man?

You wanna talk war crimes at Gitmo? Let's start with those who allow torture there. Those who allow human rights infractions. Those who DO the torturing. Let's talk about Abu Ghraib! Let's talk about photos and video of soldiers raping and sodomizing innocent women and children, mothers and sons ... photos that we're not allowed to see because it would 'endanger' the troops overseas.
WAR CRIMES ALL. And we're supposed to target this Pak guy because they've tortured him into confessing to things he didn't do. Oh what justice. God BLESS America.

Wonder if they'll be filing charges against Bush for attacking Iraq without any real proof of wrongdoing. He too was a US high school graduate.

hey obama attacked libya even though they posed no threat to the united states. and please spare me that we were protecting the innocents: Hussein killed many more than khadafi ever thought of

true, but at least Obama didnt invade another contry, and didnt alter the evidence so that he could invade under false pretenses.

oh BAH. The idea that we believe ANYTHING these officials have to say anymore is laughable. I neither believe them, nor have faith in their findings. They have proven time and time again that they torture, get their 'info' from torture (a tortured victim will say anything to stop the pain), and the officials build and give bombs to informants, only to turn around and arrest the informants. We're supposed to believe the TERROR is on our doorstep, that these guys are heroes, and that we should believe them no matter what GARBAGE they spew.
Fool me twice, shame on me.
