Warren Buffett a Hero for Performing Rare Feat: Putting Money Where Mouth Is

Many People Talk a Big Game, but this Billionaire Philanthropist Appears Ready to Back it Up

This story comes from the Yahoo! Contributor Network, where individuals publish their unique perspectives on some of the world’s most popular websites.

COMMENTARY | According to Reuters, wealthy investor-turned-philanthropist Warren Buffett has pledged to donate $1 toward paying down the U.S. national debt for every $1 donated by a Republican in Congress. The amazingly generous offer stems from Buffett's previous comments that the wealthy in the United States should pay higher taxes, to which Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell reported that Buffett could "send in a check."

Well, Mitch, ol' Warren just put his money where his mouth is. And, to sweeten the deal, Buffett promises $3 for every $1 donated by Sen. McConnell himself.

Aside from making Mitch McConnell look immature and foolish, the famously unassuming billionaire has simultaneously demonstrated two behaviors that should be emulated by all: giving back when you can and practicing what you preach. In a world of hypocrites and big talkers, Warren Buffett has demonstrated that he is a rare straight-shooter.

While not everyone is a fan of Buffett's offer, especially Republicans who feel singled-out and want Buffett's proposal to extend to Democrats in Congress as well, I see little wrong in shaming a group of wealthy politicians to give a little bit of cash to a worthy cause. And, with such little progress being made on virtually any issue by the 112th Congress, perhaps a prod in the ribs is just what the doctor ordered.

Aside from jabbing a complacent Congress in the ribs, Buffett's actions have sent a message to society at large. The message should be amplified and discussed with young people, too many of whom may have only popular culture to show them how to handle wealth.

When was the last time rap lyrics glorified giving money to charity? When was the last time a reality TV star donated a portion of his or her earnings while engaging in philanthropy? When was the last time Hollywood's elites publicly offered to go dollar-for-dollar toward a worthy cause? Too often young people only see celebrities engaging in conspicuous consumption.

When a billionaire like Buffett openly challenges Senators and Representatives to donate money toward a worthy cause, and pledges to match them dollar-for-dollar, we should also heed the challenge. Even if we don't have anything to give, we should champion his message to help set a positive example for future generations.

in fairness why pay more taxes if the white house keeps overspending.

Warren Buffett’s comment that the rich should pay higher taxes, now enshrined by President Barack Obama as the “Buffett Rule,” is drawing much applause. What is not being discussed is the billionaire’s support for anti-Catholicism. First some background information.

Over several decades, Buffett has spent a fortune funding radical abortion organizations like NARAL and Planned Parenthood; he has lavishly given money to train a new generation of abortion physicians; he has spent millions to help RU-486 (the abortion-inducing drug) to win FDA approval; and he gave his pro-abortion, population-control friends at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation nearly $31 billion in 2006 for more of the same. There’s nothing anti-Catholic about any of this, but when he intentionally seeks to subvert Catholicism by dishonestly funding pro-abortion organizations that have hijacked the Catholic name, that’s another story.

To be specific, Buffett has given hundreds of millions over the years to anti-Catholic front groups like Catholics for Choice (formerly Catholics for a Free Choice) and its sister organization in Latin America, Catholics for the Right to Decide. In 2010, the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation alone gave $759,822 to the former, and almost $1.7 million to the latter. These letter-head organizations wouldn’t exist if they depended on donations from members—they don’t have any—they exist because of the likes of Warren Buffett.

If Buffett, or someone like him, were to throw millions upon millions funding Jews for Jesus, what would the Jewish community call him? Now you know why Warren Buffett has earned the tag anti-Catholic.

How is his proposal putting his money where his mouth is? That would require him to donate his money without conditions. He is challenging people who say the government does not need more money. Why doesn't he challenge the liberals who say we need to be taxed MORE? Let me explain it. Buffet, like most liberals, only advocate increased taxes on someone else's money. Keep your hands off theirs.
      • Norman 4 mths ago
He gets to pay 15% tax because he runs a hedge fund, and does not pay the same tax we do who "earn" our income.

Another reporter who has no clue as to the meaning of words. A "hero" is not a self-made billionaire with nothing to do but make headlines and money for himself. A "hero" is a soldier (female and male) or a fireman or a policeman who makes self-sacrifices for the benefit of others! When will you morons go back to using the English language and stop re-defining words to suit your own stupidity?
      • Adam 4 mths ago
So those in socialist professions are heroes but those who point out what is currently destroying our country are not?

He's from Texas Adam, stupidity comes naturally.
      • Derek 4 mths ago
@Adam.. Are you suggesting we disband the military? Fire all police officers and firefighters simply because they are funded by the government? Perhaps we should dissolve the highway departments as well? Terminate the elderly being supported by Social Security? Good point just immediately end any and all government spending because all government programs are nothing more than pure Marxist Communism.

The problem is not the amount of taxes the "wealthy" do or don't pay. The problem is too much government spending. This focus by the media on the "wealthy" not paying enough taxes is nothing more than a continuation of their efforts to distract from the real problem. Politicians and their cronies are out of control. The only way to get their attention and get them back to working for US, instead of the other way around, is to do what I intend to do next election, vote against every incumbent, regardless of party affiliation. Term limits, mandatory balanced budget . . . but they'll never do that to themselves.

    • GummyBear  •  4 mths ago
So let's think about this, not that it's going to happen because all of the combined wealth of everyone in congress is no where close to what Buffet is worth, but let's say it was, and they (the Congress) amassed 40 billion in collections, and Buffet kept his word and put up 40 billion (approx his total net worth),
That's 80 billion dollars, against a 16 trillion dollar debt, 1/200th of the total debt this country is in. The problem should be clear now, it's not a revenue problem, it's a spending problem.
    • STOP LOOK AND LISTEN  •  Dallas, Texas  •  4 mths ago
Focus on the issue. Spending is the problem. Even Warren Buffet has said, It's not how
much you make as much as what you do with what you make. Stop stealing and borrowing
and calling it wealth. Many of the wealthy got rich from Government spending and they know
how to take advantage of us. "Get a government grant", get a government loan, get a
subsidy, set up a foundation, start a church. The information is out there. We can't keep
borrowing to feel wealthy, that's what got us where we are.
      • Adam 4 mths ago
What part of "Taxes are the lowest they have been in 60 years" do you not get??? REVENUE is the problem.
      • Derek 4 mths ago
Your post is all over the map with multiple statements that don't make any sense. "Stop stealing and borrowing and calling it wealth" -- #$%$ does that mean?As for those that get rich from government spending, you are right. Defense contractors, oil companies, and large banks and their executives all get very rich due to preferential government treatment.Deficit = Revenue (taxes) - Spending (Gov't programs)Raising revenue, and lowering government "spending" have the exact same effect on the deficit. In fact, some would argue that a new (or continuation of an existing) tax break is the same thing as increased government spending
      • Scortch Dearth 4 mths ago
Revenue is the problem, clearly, as you can show the correlation of GDP vs. federal debt getting worse and worse since the Reagan tax cuts...the debt as a percentage of GDP was at it's lowest under Carter, and HAD been at it's highest just after WWII...with the tax structure we had until Reagan, we had been steadily paying down our WWII debt...after Reagan, it shot up again and has been climbing ever since.
Our current non-tariffed "free" trade debacle has been lowering federal revenue as well over the last 30 years, by slowing draining the wealth of the middle class by destroying American jobs.

Since when did the U.S. government become a "charity" that needs to be rescued by the wealthy (or any citizen.) We ALREADY give them billions of dollars and they spend four times what we give them!!! These slimeball politicians are the ones who CREATED the debt, along with the banks and greedy corporations. If Buffet wants to help "bail out" America, that's great. He's certainly made enough money off it, but I'll be #$%$ed if I'm giving one additional penny to these crooks in Washington until they can balance a #$%$ budget and use the tax base responsibly.
    • WooHoo  •  4 mths ago
The vast majority of the current elected republicans have signed on to a pledge peddled by anti-tax purist Grover Norquist, which beholds them to not raise any income taxes by any amount under any circumstances, or to bring in new revenue by closing loopholes. This pledge, which Rep. Ryan's budget loyally adheres to, in effect freezes tax policy in time -- preserving not only Bush's massive and supposedly temporary tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, but also a vast mishmash of tax breaks and loopholes for specific industries won by well-funded lobbyists.
The problem has become so great that many giant American corporations have become so adept at exploiting loopholes in the tax code that they paid no federal income taxes at all last year -- if these elected officials in Congress follow their pledge to Norquist, they won't be able to close a single one of the loopholes that are allowing corporations to avoid paying their fair share.
Even Reagan (the Republicans hero) recognized the difference between just plain raising taxes and simplifying the tax code to cut out loopholes that subsidize corporations. In 1984, he arranged to bring in $50 billion over three years, mainly by closing these loopholes. His 1986 reform act not only included $120 billion in tax hikes for corporations over five years, it also closed $300 billion worth of corporate loopholes.
Ten years ago today, the wealthiest Americans caught a multi-billion dollar break from their benefactor, then-president George W. Bush. In the decade since, through two wars, natural disasters, a plummeting economy and a soaring debt, the wealthiest Americans have gotten to keep those Bush tax cuts.
I Support Tax Reform Act of 2011...End the Bush Tax Code…NOW!

Rust and others like him are fools. A BILLIONAIRE offers to pay a measly $1 in matching funds?! Why not $1,000 for every dollar? Why single out Republicans? I'm sure Buffett must be a few dollars richer after his singing gig in China! Anyone can write a check to pay down the debt, anytime they want. No conditions.

Another misleading article. I pay max tax and have for the past 40 years. He gets to pay 15% tax because he runs a hedge fund. Let him pay 40-50% (or worse in some states) tax like the rest of us and he will shut up.
