Warren's 'Class Warfare' Video Goes Viral, GOP Demands Harvard Fire Her

A Video Supporting Taxing the Wealthy Gets Traction on YouTube

This story comes from the Yahoo! Contributor Network, where individuals publish their unique perspectives on some of the world’s most popular websites.
Do you have a story to tell? Become a Yahoo! contributor

Elizabeth Warren, the former Obama administration special adviser regarding consumer affairs and finance law, is well known in Massachusetts and the surrounding New England area and among those well versed in activities concerning the middle class. But aside from political wonks, policy advisors, and those familiar with government and finance law, Warren's name may not be all that familiar. With the posting of a video on YouTube scoffing at "class warfare," that seems about to change.

On September 13, Warren announced her candidacy for the Massachusetts U. S. Senate seat currently held by Sen. Scott Brown, who surprisingly took the traditionally Democratic seat long held by Sen. Edward "Ted" Kennedy. On September 18, a video went up on YouTube showing the Harvard law professor speaking at a small gathering about the debt crisis, "class warfare," and fair taxation. The video went viral and Warren seems to be on the verge of singlehandedly eliminating the GOP's basic argument against taxing the wealthy and re-establishing the Bush tax breaks -- that it is a form of class warfare.

And Republicans are wishing they had never heard of her at all.

"I hear all this, you know, 'Well, this is class warfare, this is whatever,'" Warren says in the video, which was shot in August when Warren was exploring the idea of a Senate bid. "No. There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own -- nobody."

Warren, who has been a tireless consumer rights advocate and worked in an advisory capacity on the massive Wall Street reform legislation known as Frank-Dodd, is seen in the video enumerating the trillions of dollars squandered by the Bush administration on tax cuts for the wealthy, wasteful wars, and a revamping of the health care drug program that cost senior citizens more and only seemed to benefit pharmaceutical companies. She then makes it clear that the idea that allowing the Bush tax breaks to expire and calling it "class warfare" is nonsensical in that those who have prospered did so with the help of taxes, workers, protection, and infrastructural programs made possible by the taxes paid by all.

"You built a factory out there - good for you," she goes on. "But I want to be clear. You moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for. You hired workers the rest of us paid to educate. You were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. Now look, you built a factory and it turned into something terrific, or a great idea? God bless. Keep a big hunk of it. But part of the underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along."

Warren's message is likely to resonate well in Massachusetts -- as it does with most Americans -- and already seems to be doing so. The law professor has gained a lead in the polls, 46 percent to Brown's 43 percent, according to Public Policy Polling.

But the GOP, who blocked her appointment to the newly created Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in Washington (an appointment now to be filled by Robert Cordray, upon Congressional approval), are not idly standing by and just allowing Warren to take Brown's Senate seat. On Friday, USA Todayreported that they entered a little "class warfare" of their own and went after her by attempting to have Warren removed from her current job of teaching as a Harvard law professor.

According to the GOP, Harvard must ask for Warren's resignation because it is a tax-exempt institution, which means it cannot "participate in or intervene in" any campaign for political office. But Warren's staff dismisses the idea of termination, noting that the former elementary school teacher "... takes her responsibilities to her students and the university seriously and she will fulfill her commitments in line with all relevant policies."

Harvard's policy on political activities states that individuals can become involved in politics as long as they do nothing political "within the context of their employment" or with Harvard's "real or apparent authorization."

The rich have stolen just about everything that makes them rich from all you colossal dimwits, but you are all too stupefyingly stupid to see that. And then you want to pay them even more of your money by paying THEIR taxes. "Stupid" isn't even a strong enough term. Go tell it on the mountain, Elizabeth!
    • Dennis B  •  8 mths ago
The only thing she did not mention was the fact that tax payers are paying for the subsides that the government gives to corporations or seed money to start new business. Take GE for example 300 million in subsides 3 billion in proft no taxes and then to thank us they are building a new plant in China .
      • Julie 8 mths ago
Dennis; you forget where did the tax payer get their money to pay those taxes? Did the chicken come first or did the egg? So you have the business, the tax payer, the government .
      • beachbum690 8 mths ago
so maybe we should give them a tax break!
Or we can be sensible and vote for someone who is not screwing us.
        Just a thought

It's absolutely true that people do not make it on their own. How many people died and gave their life up fighting evil so that everyone could have the freedom that they have now? Without that, people couldn't have accomplished what they have.

        Should I go give Blood?
      • William 8 mths ago
Elwood, if you haven't given blood then, yes, you should. I say that because my family is military and have shed blood in every war and conflict.
      • Julie 8 mths ago
Elwood if your blood is clean and not poluted. The military that have sacrificed their lives or injured fisically or mentally are from all parties. If our bi-partison military personal can risk their lives to keep us safe the politican can at least fight corruption in our government.

Waaahhhhh. I am offended. Somebody needs to apologize. Waaaahhh. -- The new GOP theme-song and general response to everything. Man-up GOP, you have over the past 10 years becoming a party of whiners. Ooops. Sorry GOP. I will apologize if you are offended.

Can people please post what they think their fare share should be. What should be the highest amount anyone should ever have to pay as a percentage?
      • party of fear 8 mths ago
They should break down the costs, military, roads, police fire, hey but we don't have a pick and choose menu do we, if we did I wouldn't be paying for a War and hospitals in Iraq right now. I would invest back into the US, expect some fraud, because it is always there and have a excellent infrastructure and education rather than a shiny new thing that explodes on some village.

The top income tax bracket was in the low 90s when Eisenhower was president. That might be a bit high. Lets say 75% for the top income bracket.
      • bryanc 8 mths ago
Jim, how about we all top out at a graduated top rate of 35% for $200,000 and above, and we get to aim 10% of our tax money to the gov't programs of our own choice? Military, schools, social security? a little direct control would be satisfying, huh?

Class warfare ? They say the Fed pushed out a deluge of money in the last three years, It must have gotten stuck at the top because the middle class didn't get any of it. All the middle class got was the inflationary costs of everything retail.
      • Vaffanculo 8 mths ago
That's because somebody stopped the drilling for oil process in the Gulf of Mexico, while his buddy can get a stronghold in the business in Brazil.

If fuel prices go up, everything else has to follow. It's simple economics, lost on the simpletons.

The rich in this country, in the past, had been smart enough to dribble out just enough to the rest of us just so we don't rise up in open revolt & kill them. But they don't even bother much with that pretense anymore. They pretty much have decided it's easier to rip-off/seize wealth from the lower classes. The rich HAVE always waged class warfare on the lower classes. The rich & their GOP protectors don't understand that if the middle & lower classes are working & prospering the people at the top will also prosper and not the other way around. The GOP still alludes to Reagan's trickle down theory ... "let the rich get richer & the wealth will trickle down to those below ...". Well, that ain't happening. The ba$tards are catching any trickle with a drip pan & keeping it for themselves.
      • Julie 8 mths ago
Joe F=ool: It's the policies of our government that created the difference between what happened back in the past and what is happening now. Instead of going back and cleaning up what was put on the books they pile more on it. The rich can go back and pick and choose which one that will work for them, like a puzzel. One will cansel another one out, and two could fit together nicely. All they have to do is hire some one to go through all the laws and bills and put together the ones that best fits their business. What they need to do is clean up all the laws, regulations, bills, rules, pork, etc. that is filed in our government and make the government more simple for every one.

You're right, no one did it alone. Its called Enslaved Consumerism. We the people have become dependent on the Big Business Corporations. They are no longer dependent on us. On top of that they think their revenue and monetary value gives them the wisdom to manipulate our society. For 10 years these tax breaks have been in place and instead of creating jobs, they are sitting on trillions of dollars to pad their own expense tabs (while shipping new jobs to China to hire child-slaves for pennies) . Smaller Government = Corporate Infiltration. Evidence? Perry lets Big Business Corporations run Texas without Government intervention and what happens? First in pollution, last in environmental safety, last in education, 98% of jobs created are minimum wage (Bachmann wants to eliminate minimum wage. Wait, so those 98% can be paid pennies like in China?) Clearly Big Business wants to take as many shortcuts as possible to save pennies in their pocket. Do not let the lies of smaller Government deceive you. Its ironic how Perry bashes a government-led healthcare system, although the only reason he was able to have an experimental stem-cell treatment on his back is because of his position is Government (and the most optimal plan). But I guess, he is just a naturally blessed man by God. To hell with pensions too, right? Did you see how much Congress members are paid when they are retired? Seems a bit hypocritical to me. Are we ever going to evolve as a society or are we going to be enslaved by the Big Business Corporations who will keep us shackled in an endless cycle that is only a benefit to them.
      • Howie667 8 mths ago
I would argue that a larger more powerful government that has its tentacles in every aspect of daily life and trade enables big corporate crony capitalists to consolidate power and outmaneuver small businesses who do not have the resources or economies of scale to navigate complicated regulation or to lobby for special treatment, government contracts, etc that give them an advantage.
        Monsanto is a prime example.
It's not an easy fix but the answer doesn't lie in the Republican or Democratic party.
      • A Yahoo! User 8 mths ago
I understand your sentiment but its not a reality. Without Government intervention and regulation the only other alternative is that Corporations simply call the shots. Our Government may have its flaws but thats because we sit around, ignorant, twiddling our thumbs. We don't hold anybody accountable. But by eliminating Government, the Big Business Corporations then begin to dictate global policy behind locked and private doors. It's either or.. Do you want a Government that is held accountable by voters? Or do you want Corporations to to be able to call the shots as they please? From what I've seen these Big Business Corporations are only interested in taking shortcuts and the evidence points to this. Do Big Business Corporations care about the evolution of society and of the Minds within it? Or do they care about expanding their profit margins by any means necessary? I'd have no problem agreeing with you, if the evidence was to the contrary.
      • tufstuf 8 mths ago
That is why citizens must stay active and not apathetic. We must also educate ourselves in history, civics, law, anthropology, and classic literature. We must get the corporations and lobbyists out of our government via a Constitutional amendment defining citizens correctly and not as including corporations. There is a place on-line to sign that petitiion; google it now and do it. If we don't get that done then you are right, our government will just be an arm of the corporate facists.

Tax EVERYBODY at 8%!!!!!! PAY THEIR FAIR SHARE!!!!!!
    • breukelin  •  8 mths ago
I agree with warren though her example sounds a little socialist. Stress in limited to moderate amounts helps people perform better.Granting tax cuts to corporations and the rich reduces the amount of stress on their businesses- so they relax rather than work harder and create new jobs- essentially becoming like the 50% of americans who pay no taxes- the poor receive all sorts of free money and so there is no motivation to work. Yeah so why not cut aid to encourage these people to get off their butts. Because 10000 minimum wage earners working and paying taxes will not help the economy as much #$%$ rich people creating new money and new jobs.
    • Christina  •  8 mths ago
I agree with her. If the rich "job creators" find it so unprofitable to hire American workers then why do they think OUR government, the government of the country they refuse to invest in, owes them TAX CUTS. A tax CUT implies they are getting a free pass to not pay the percentage they were supposed to pay in the first place. I think our government should stop handing out incentives to move business to other countries and start adding incentives to keep businesses here.
    • DQ  •  8 mths ago
You don't hear poor people complain about class warfare much. It's an affluent cry meant to silence anyone messing with their perks, tax breaks and oversees accounts. The idea that rich folks should be courted, bribed and indulged so they create more jobs is a real head scratcher. Individuals don't create many jobs, businesses do. But that gets conveniently lost in the shuffle except for Jon Stewart's hilarious skit with the crying millionaire and an 800 number where you can donate tyour salary to save his perks.
    • meister  •  8 mths ago
I'm the poor man and i give millions of jobs by shopping local and supporting the small business that hire every time we get a haircut, shop at the grocery and hire a local trades man. I dont stash my money in a hedge fund invested in derivatives..
      Fox never told you that?
    • Elaeblue  •  8 mths ago
Once again someone being fired from their job for stating their own opinion - when will this stop? We need to quit expecting every person to toe the party line and only say what is the approved line...this is America not Russia!
    • Another Voice  •  8 mths ago
Don't get hung up on rich or poor. If I pay 30% income tax, why can't the millionaires?
    • Beau B  •  8 mths ago
She's right. Bush put 2 wars on a credit card for 2 trillion and put 1 trillion away for the drug companies in this bogus medicare drug bill and put 1 trillion dollars to tax cuts for the rich. That's 4 trillion dollars. Let me write that for you people: 4,000,000,000,000.
