Watch ‘Empire’ Star V Bozeman’s Full Performance of ‘Black and Blue’ (EXCLUSIVE)
On last night’s “Empire,” viewers got a taste of V Bozeman’s new song, “Black and Blue,” when the rising star performed for Billy Baretti (Judd Nelson) — the owner of Creedmoor Records and Lucious Lyon’s (Terrence Howard) bitter mentor-turned-rival. This is Bozeman’s second appearance on “Empire,” following her breakout performance of “What Is Love” in the Fox drama’s pilot. After the song’s debut on “Empire,” the video for “What Is Love” has amassed over a million views on YouTube to date.
Below, Variety has an exclusive first look at the full video for Bozeman’s new track, produced by “Empire’s” executive music producer Timbaland, written by Jim Beanz and directed by Adam Tillman-Young.
The video concept pays homage to Coldplay’s “Yellow,” which was also presented in one continuous take. The video was shot on location at dawn in MacArthur Park, one of the most dangerous locations in East Los Angeles.
As the song deals with the potent and all too real theme of domestic violence, the video follows a woman who feels safer walking alone through a dangerous area of the city than she does in her own abusive relationship. Eagle-eyed viewers may notice that the color grading of the piece starts off feeling “black and blue,” before gradually becoming warmer and more hopeful.
