Watch Michael Strahan's First Day as Kelly Ripa's Co-Host on 'Live!'

Former New York Giants football player Michael Strahan officially became Kelly Ripa's permanent co-host on morning show Live! With Kelly on Tuesday, ending months of speculation.

Strahan replaces Regis Philbin, who retired in November after clocking 995,000 minutes in his 28 years as the morning show’s leading man. The show is now called Live! With Kelly and Michael.

"Kelly and Michael were great today," the show's executive producer Michael Gelman tells Mashable. "There was a lot of excitement in the studio and their chemistry proved exactly why he was chosen for the job."

Up until Monday, Live! With Kelly filled Philbin's seat with a rotating cast of celebrity fill-ins such as Strahan, Saturday Night Live's Seth Meyers, singer Josh Groban, entertainer Nick Lachey and 55 others. Ripa hosted the show alone Monday.

"Unbelievable, unbelievable," said Strahan after being introduced Tuesday and lifting Ripa off her fit as he entered. "Regis, he set the benchmark for so many. I'm in awe of him. ... If it weren't for him, I wouldn't be sitting here."

Strahan's fiancé, Nicole Murphy, turned to Twitter on Tuesday and shared this Instagram snap:

TMZ in August pegged Strahan, who won a Super Bowl ring in 2008, as the co-host in a report, citing ABC staff members for relaying the news. At the time, a spokesperson for Disney/ABC Television Group told Mashable they wouldn't comment on "co-host speculation."

Strahan had received the third-most votes in the Mashable poll, "Who Should Be Kelly Ripa's Co-Host?" when that report published. Only Michael Buckley and Neil Patrick Harris had garnered more votes, with Buckley the clear winner with 46% of the votes.
