Waters Launches 5 Novel Mass Spectrometry Technologies - Analyst Blog

Analytical instrument and software giant Waters Corporation WAT continues with its strategic initiative of launching new technologies and innovations in mass spectrometry. This time the company has aptly used the American Society of Mass Spectrometry’s 63rd conference as a coveted platform to showcase five of its newest innovations.

Product Details

Vion IMS QTof Mass Spectrometer: This highly advanced instrument, integrating the strength of high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry and ion mobility separation, is likely to mark a colossal improvement over traditional high-resolution mass spectrometry. This instrument will also bring extreme clarity to any sample, notwithstanding the quantity or concentration of analytes, thereby allowing scientists to accomplish breakthrough innovation in sample screening, metabolite identification, or classical ‘omics experiments.

UNIFI Scientific Information System Software: In a bid to improve laboratory productivity, Waters has launched the next-generation Version 1.8 of the UNIFI Scientific Information System Software. This latest comprehensive software, compatible with the newly launched Vion IMS QTof Mass Spectrometer, has impressive features like native atmospheric pressure gas chromatography (“APGC”) control, time-of-flight (Tof) multiple reaction monitoring (“MRM”) support and Tof quantitative and qualitative workflows.

REIMS Research System with iKnife Sampling: This system eliminates the need of sample preparation and chromatographic separation that will provide researchers with quick data acquisition. Management believes this technology will enable scientists to deal with food fraud and adulteration in a stricter and more confident manner.

Oasis PRiME HLB: Waters believes this first-of-a kind solid phase extraction (“SPE”) product will allow scientists to process samples at 40% higher speed and create samples that are 70% cleaner. A milestone product of Waters, Oasis PRiME is expected to achieve groundbreaking results in liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry experiments, thereby enhancing its commercial appeal.

HILIC-based Glycoprotein Column: Waters’ newest success in development of disruptive technologies include its latest ACQUITY UPLC Glycoprotein BEH Amide 300Å 1.7-µm Column that will provide biopharmaceutical companies with better insight about the location of glycan molecules during development of therapeutic proteins. This product belongs to the family of GlycoWorks RapiFluor-MS N-Glycan sample preparation kits and Biopharmaceutical Platform Solution with UNIFI, previously developed by the company.

Bottom Line

Waters is a leader in high-performance liquid chromatography and also ranks among the top 5 franchise in mass spectrometry markets. Backed by relentless efforts of its research and development (R&D) division, the company has judiciously sensed the market needs and come up with groundbreaking innovations to exceed client expectation. Prior to this, the company had unveiled a broad range of innovative products at the 2015 Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy (read more: Waters Corp. Riding High on New Products Offering).

We believe the growing popularity of research-intensive products will unlock a plethora of opportunities for the company’s mass spectrometry business, going forward. If rapid market traction of the previously launched products is an indicator, Waters’ recent efforts are likely to be greeted with thundering applause from clients.
