    Wave of deaths, arrests as ICRC visits Syria

    BEIRUT (AP) — Syria saw a wave of violence and arrests Sunday as the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross visited Damascus to address issues including caring for the wounded and access to detainees during the government's crackdown on a 5-month-old uprising.

    Activists reported military operations and sweeping arrests in flash point areas including Idlib near the Turkish border and the eastern city of Deir el-Zour. There were reports of deaths, but numbers were unclear.

    The state-run news agency reported that nine people were killed in central Syria in an ambush by armed groups in central Syria. The report, which could not be confirmed, said the victims were six soldiers and three civilians.

    Syria has banned foreign journalists and restricted local media, making it difficult to independently verify reports. The regime blames the unrest on thugs and armed gangs and claims security forces are the real victims.

    The U.N. estimates some 2,200 people have been killed since March as protesters take to the streets every week, despite the near-certainty that they will face a barrage of bullets and sniper fire by security forces. The regime is in no imminent danger of collapse, leading to concerns violence will escalate in coming weeks and months.

    ICRC President Jakob Kellenberger met with Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem on Sunday and was scheduled to meet President Bashar Assad on Monday.

    The government crackdown on dissent has drawn international criticism and sanctions. The European Union announced Friday it was banning oil imports from Syria, which will cost the embattled regime millions of dollars each day.

    While Assad brushed off earlier condemnation as foreign meddling, the oil embargo is significant because Damascus gets about 28 percent of its revenue from the oil trade and sells fuel to France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. Some analysts believe Syria is getting financial assistance from Iran, which would cushion the EU blow.

    The United States has hit more than 30 Syrian officials, including Assad himself, with economic sanctions, banned any U.S. import of Syrian oil or petroleum products, and frozen all Syrian government assets subject to American jurisdiction. But the U.S. has isolated Syria for decades and has little leverage with the regime.

    On Sunday, a state-run newspaper in Syria criticized Europe's move.

    "Instead of playing an effective and positive political role, Europe shows its pent-up desire to evoke the colonial past," Al-Thawra newspaper said.

    The head of the Arab League told reporters Sunday he plans to go to Syria this week to "talk frankly and convey existing concerns." His trip would follow an emergency Arab League meeting a week ago about the Syria situation. Elaraby said he was not seeking guarantees of action from the government ahead of his visit.

      Why has the red cross not done anything in the ghettos of america where any black person is subject at anytime to assassination by police usually with some trumped up bs being spoken later as if that makes it all ok. Shot while resisting arrest. Arrest for what? "I thought he had a weapon" is another favorite. This in a land where the constitution forbids the governments interfering in a persons right to possess and bear arms. With more of our population imprisoned than anywhere else on the planet our problems and societal inequities need to be solved before casting aspersions elsewhere.

      The ICRC has great results with Democratic Nations and almost no results with these non-democratic terrorist States. The ICRC needs to think of new policies to gain access to these Terrorist Regimes. i.e. more aggressive exposure.

      Obama supports the al Qaeda influenced rebels and does virtually nothing about Syria except placing an Ambassador there which had not been done for years because of their state sponsorship of terrorism. Over 2,300 protesters killed by Assad so far. Obama dithers. Libya had no real defense. Syria does, that is the difference.

        Over 15,000 people had been killed in Libya before NATO got involved (not the U.S. specifically), and Libya has a population 1/3rd that of Syria.

        If you don't think Islamic extremists are involved in Syria, you are either ignorant or being deliberately obtuse in order to score a political point. The Saudis have long had it out for Assad's government for their allegiance to Iran and support of Hezbollah, and they're backing destabilizing forces in Syria just as they have in Iraq - various Sunni extremist groups.

        I agree that Saudi Arabia as well as the Gulf states wealthy individuals and governments' officials have been the main engine behind the Syrian movement. However, while the Syrians appreciate receiving financial supports from those sources, don not bet on the Syrians to give up their rights for freedom that they had lost for half a century. The Syrian people are, aside of being the bravest, they possess a great sense of political awareness and intelligence !! Rest assured that once the dust settled, they will show those extremists the way out.

      Get our troops put of all Muslim countries. The Muslims are very efficient at killing each other. They need no help from us. All of the 911 terrorists lived in the US, WE LET THEM IN.
      We have plenty of Muslims in our country that need killing. End immigration from all Muslim nations.

      Obama's puppetmaster(s) in the one world gov't cannot have individual despots running countries. The fall of Mubarak, Ghadaffi and others, Hugo Chavez cancer, have all been carefully orchestrated. Assad has proven particularly troublesome. Many Syrians are well educated.

      The people who kill are NATO's militia. It is their job to kill as many Syrians as possible.

      I just wounder how long it will be before anyone really does anything or if anyone will really do anything at all? As I for one feel the U.S. should just sit this one out and let the chips fall where they may. As we have seen more than once in cases lik these it is simply a waste of American lives, money and time. Always to no avail.

      Red Cross is playing a partisan role as spy and helping to pinpoint personnel to be targeted. When they take the role of care givers only to those who are betraying their country for the benefit of those who fund these false revolutions then they should not be allowed entry to the countries they are participating in undermining.
      Of course the R.C. will say that it is possible some of their many volunteers could have ulterior motives that to is a lie. Though classified as a non-profit charity in the US it is interesting that their appointed head is usually a right wing zealot or family member of such a hawk.

      vartanb...... What do you mean by "Our Red Cross"? When has Syria ever donated anything to the Red Cross? Just the fact that you're complaining that the Red Cross isn't doing what YOU want it to do proves that neither you or your #$%$ Ant Country deserve the help the Red Cross is trying to give you. The Red Cross doesn't stop wars it saves worthless people like you by ensuring you don't starve to death, if you don't want the help, good luck surviving on sand.

      Red cross should not be an international organization as it is not
      doing its duty as should bge and why they talk only on syria and
      neglegting other leaders i. They should find out who created these
      problem for those countries and then they have to talk;

      killing now and since decades;

      in

      1- afghanistan killoing going now for 11 years and not a new.
      2- turkey. to their kurdish people.
      3- bahrain
      4- palestine since 1948
      5- yemen and now our u.s. Forces there.
      6- pakistan
      7- somalia
      8- libya to get trheir oil , by u.s., britian and france.
      still nato criminal organization killing libyan people.
      9- iraq the killed their leaders for the sake of israel.

      red cross organization to close its dorr like united nations should
      be closed as it is for - dividing nations and not united.

      red cross has to find who created all these problem in the world.

      any person reading my comment and do not agree with me , please

        Red Cross is a non-political organization whose sole purpose is to provide disaster relief and collect resources to save lives. I don't know where you got the idea that it was anything more than that.
    • vartanb  •  8 mths ago
      I thought there is an international red cross and this also controlled
      by america and european countries.
      Why they do not go and ask nato to withdraw from libya, why the
      do nto check how many killed in bahrain and now our forces killing
      in yemen , of yamaniese people and the red cross to not take our
      jesus croos from their logo and put only the red blood and
      shame on our red cross organizations and why they do not check
      in turkey now killing hundreds of its national kurdish people;

      whoever is teh presdient of red cross to go to check the killed
      people even now in;

      1- afghanistan.
      2- turkey
      2- bahrain.
      3- yemen.
      4- pakistan
      5 - iraq
      6 - turkey
      7- libya
      8 - somalia
      9- palestine

      and to find who created all these killing and which countries.
      And not to be double standard and to follow the instructions from
      the boss country.

      shame on red cross organization and it should be closed and to not
      exit in america and in the world and all bluffing people and misleading
      the world by their logo.
