Weather blocks search for 4 overdue on Mt. Rainier

MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK, Wash. (AP) — Rescuers are hoping for better weather Saturday after a blizzard kept them from searching for four people missing on Washington's Mount Rainier.

National Park spokeswoman Patti Wold says five elite mountaineers spent Friday morning searching for two climbers and two campers who were due to return from their trips at the beginning of the week. But conditions on 14,410-foot volcano, including 40-mph winds and zero visibility, forced them back down the mountain for the rest of the day.

Rangers say the two parties were well-equipped and hopefully have dug in to wait out the storm, but they could be getting low on supplies.

The missing campers are 37-year-old Mark Vucich, of San Diego, and 30-year-old Michelle Trojanowski, of Atlanta. The climbers were identified Friday as 52-year-old Sork "Erik" Yang, of Springfield, Ore., and Jin Seol Hee, of Korea.

Yeah OK...On the bright side; I'm sure you'll never need a rescue team to pry that TV remote control from your fat fingers....Stay safe....

I surf large waves in Hawaii, race motorcycles, mountain bike, trek, climb, hike, ect. I don't push the envelope like these dingbats that get caught up in adverse conditions every f'in' year.. Look, here, my middle finger- and it 'aint fat like your moronic head.

@ Lost.....while I understand the need to try new challenges, they could have chosen a better time to do this climb, and it would still have been a challenge for most people. These idiots not only endanger themselves, but they also put at risk those that must now go rescue them.

If they are as "well equipped" and "elite" as the article suggests, then they stand a very good chance of surviving...

Why are they looking for them? Leave em alone and they might come back.

That thought crossed my mind also, after all it's not as if they're boy scouts on a day trip. These are supposed to be experienced people.....

I'm getting a little tired of reading about stuff like this year after year. They need to start making these people pay a premium price for the rescue efforts. Only then will these people start to rethink risking their lives, and RESCUERS LIVES, every Winter!

I agree totally. I've just been in the Northwest here for the past 4 years but it seems every winter we're reading stories about these rescue missions. These people don't have enough forethought to realize that they are not only putting their lives at risk but other people's lives at risk also when rescue groups need to be sent out to help them. These people need to be charged for these rescue missions otherwise they'll continue to go out ill prepared as they have. It's sad not to help people in these kinds of situations but why should we as tax payers be forced to have to pay for their stupidity in the first place.

I live in the Northwest and have never understood how or why someone would climb Rainier or Hood in the dead of winter. It's incredibly arrogant and narcissistic. I've backpacked extensively and have never had a problem because safety was #1--and we never took chances with the weather (this was back in the 80s, and there were no cell phones, GPS or any of that stuff--if you were stuck, you were stuck...and there were far fewer stories like this).

Even on a short day hike, you should bring enough food for three or four days, and well as your 10 essentials (backpackers know what this means). Be a scout--be prepared. I have no doubt the weather forecast was available to all these hikers/climbers.

I grew up in Oregon too. I spent a lot of time riding horses in the hills starting when I was about 10. Who would even want to go out in the winter? In the best of times it's wet and cold and miserable. What kind of idiot thinks it's fun to sleep in snow? If the word "frostbite" didn't mean anything to them before, I bet it does now.

Given the resent record of climbers on Mt Rainier, maybe they should all stay home and drink cocoa....

Can anybody stop these idiots from going on Mt. Rainer in the winter time? Let these people die and get buried by the snow.

No cell phone, no eprib? you can say cell phones dont work but thats not true, in search and rescue, transponders are brought in, helicopters have transponders. Emergency position becons can weigh less than 4 ounces, they are required on my boat. Why, because its dangerious on the water and search and rescue cost alot of money and cost lives.
If your going to extream wildernes conditions take resopnsability for your safety.
These hikers will walk out soon enough. Best wishes for them nothing more than a good story.

why not make all climbers wear a rfid bracelet to climb the moountain then you could easily locate them or their dead bodies

$100,000 fee for the rescue to each of the morons...

News flash, Mt. Ranier in the winter is not the place to go "camping" ! How many of these each year?
    • Yourkiddingme  •  Pittsburg, California  •  4 mths ago
None of these four could qualify as a village idiot. Way too dumb.....
    • MNS  •  4 mths ago
Death Wish: "I would like to climb till I can no longer breathe and then freeze to death." Non-qualified Village Idiots that make others have to rescue them. I agree with Whyitis. Leave them alone, maybe they will come back. Yaaa right! Send their parents up for them.
