Nominees for the "Internet's highest honor," the 16th annual Webby Awards for excellence in online content, were announced this week, culled from nearly 10,000 entries and over 60 countries and covering websites, interactive advertising, online film and video, mobile and apps.
Dozens of categories in each of the four main areas cover topics ranging from art and activism to beauty and blogs, education, DIY, games, augmented reality, viral campaigns, shopping, comedy and entertainment, politics, and "the weird."
"The nominees mirror this incredible year on the Internet, from memes to viral videos to cultural movements and extraordinary creativity," said David-Michel Davies, Executive Director of the Webby Awards in the announcement.
Polls are open for the public to vote through April 26 for favorites in the Webby People's Voice Awards at pv.webbyawards.com.
Winners will be announced on May 1 and the Webby Award presentations will be streamed live online on May 21 with comedian Patton Oswalt hosting the event, famous for its often amusing signature five-word acceptance speeches.
